Hi all,

Question: does anyone know Michigan's law concerning CCW permits from other states?
Do I have to get a temp one there, or something? Or I can just use the other state's permit there?

Thanks!

AZ.

Also, since I am a resident of MI, but bought my gun in AZ where registration is not required, do I have to register my gun when I go back to MI for vacations?

Thanks

Are you sure I don't have to, since I am still a resident of MI?

Like, if I was pulled over, and had it, they would see i have MI ID, and a gun that they have no record of. You sure?
Thanks!

since you'd be handing over your valid AZ CCW along with your MI ID I don't see why you'd have anything to worry about. That's the whole deal with reciprocity, as long as you obey the MI CCW laws you are legal w/ your AZ permit.

PS. When you register your handgun in MI, which I did for no good reason right after purchase thinking I was required to, they just give you a green safty inspection card which you are not required to carry when transproting anyways.

Hard to tell from what you've said but it sounds like you have an Arizona "non-resident" permit? Michigan does not recognize any non-resident permits held by Michigan residents. I don't see how you can have a resident Arizona permit if you are not a resident of that state. Dual residency? I didn't think that was possible.

You must have a Michigan permit to carry concealed in Michigan if you are a resident of Michigan. I would register it in my county of residence since it costs nothing and it is the law. When in doubt ask the Michigan cops and they'll help you stay legal.

You sound like a test case waiting to happen!

Kent County, MI charges me $5 for my safety inspections. If you don't have a CCW they charge you $5 for a purchase permit and then waive the inspection fee.

If you are a resident of Michigan, your handgun has to be "safety inspected." Not doing so is a misdemenor.

As far as carrying your green card: Technically, you don't have to. Most people do, because most police officers believe you need to have it, but legally, you can leave it at home.

Why not just get a Michigan CPL?

Like Ryder, I'm a little confused about your situation.

With that said:

If you are a MI resident, you need a Michigan CPL - period. Michigan does not recognize an out of state permit as valid for a Michigan resident. Same for registration - Michigan resident legally must register all handguns.

If you are an AZ resident and have a permit to carry, you are good to go in Michigan and no need to register.

That is one good thing about Michigan CCW laws, they recognize permits from any/all states, whether that state reciprocates or not.
