Ok, so I just moved to Michigan from Ohio. I was going through MI laws and it says that I can't get a CCW until I've been a resident for 6 months. I have an Ohio CCW and there is a caveat that the board can waive the 6 month wait time since I currently do have a CCW in good standing. Does anyone know if this is they can but they won't, they can and the may, or they can and they will issue my permit early. I just am not amused about not carrying for 6 months.

thanks,
Ben

Ummm.... let's see..... you could apply immediately and maybe get approved immediately. Or you could wait six months to apply and not have any chance at all of getting the permit before the six months is up.

Personally, I think I would just apply immediately and you will probably get a much more accurate answer than you will get on THR.

Don't quote me, because I'm not 100%, but I think I heard somewhere that you can get the 6 months waived here, too, if you gave a carry permit in your previous state of residence.

ETA- check the Michigan State Police web site, I might've read it there.

Don't forget to register your handguns. Possession of an unregistered handgun is only a misdemeanor if you don't have a CPL, but becomes a felony if you do have a CPL.

Keep in mind that in Michigan, although CPLs are statewide effective, they are county issued. I would recommend communicating with county government for the county in which you will be living in Michigan. If you are not sure of your new county of residence in MI, figure that out first.

You will find quite a difference from one county to another here. If you have a choice on where you will be living you might want to try something like Michigan Gun Owners forum to ask about various counties/cities attitudes towards concealed pistol licenses. good luck.

Wayne County is among the slowest in processing CPL renewals, and the sheriff has been openly hostile in the past about concealed carry holders.

I renewed my CPL last year. It was due in June 2013. I put in my renewal before the end of February, and I didn't get my new permit until the end of June. Fortunately, there's a provision in the law that automatically extends your old permit, if there's a delay on behalf of the county. They're anti-gun in Wayne County politics, but also extremely incompetent. Another example of hack politics.

Oakland County is a good place. Their initial issues and renewals go pretty quickly. Of course, the sheriff and the County Executive are both conservative Republicans.

The six months requirement may be waived at the descretion of the gun board of the county in which you reside if you have a valid Ohio permit, but the training requirement will not be waived. You will still have to attend a Michigan CPL class.

Can I get an actual citation of the law for this? The only thing I've ever seen (an I'd have to look up the statute again) shows possession of an unregistered handgun to be a civil infraction, punishable with a $250 fine. I could not find anything that classified it as a misdemeanor, or a felony.
