More in Colorado aim to carry guns
Concealed-carry requests escalate

By Erin Emery, The Denver Post 03/12/2008

COLORADO SPRINGS — Applications for concealed-weapon permits have skyrocketed in Colorado, with the increase fueled by everything from heavily publicized mass shootings to routine renewals, according to the state's sheriffs.

In 2007, 9,880 people statewide sought permits, compared with 6,649 people in 2006 and 6,670 people in 2005, according to the County Sheriffs of Colorado. And the surge has continued into 2008 in several counties.

Law-enforcement experts have different ideas on why more people want to carry concealed weapons. Some believe it is due to a rash of violent outbreaks at Virginia Tech, Northern Illinois University and a mall in Utah.

Some sheriff's offices believe churches concerned about protecting their flocks are seeking concealed-carry permits. Another official believes many of the initial batch of five-year permits in the state are expiring soon and that people are simply renewing applications. Those seeking permits are not required to explain why they want to carry a weapon. Whatever the reason, the trend is real.

"People want to defend themselves," said Doug Davis, president of the Pikes Peak Firearms Coalition. "That's why they get permits."

After Matthew Murray opened fire at New Life Church in Colorado Springs on Dec. 9, killing two sisters, applications for permits soared in El Paso County. The number rose by 123 in December, 171 in January, and 294 in February, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. That represents increases of 31 percent in December, 155 percent in January and 262 percent in February.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said: "We saw a real surge after the New Life incident. People were commenting that they were concerned about the homicide rate in the city. They were asking, 'Is it really getting that bad? Should we be worried?' "

Maketa said that perception locally, combined with acts of violence on college campuses and at the Utah mall, spurred people to seek permits.

Adams County is on pace to double the number of applications processed this year over last year, said Candi Baker, spokeswoman for the sheriff.

"Some of those applicants have directly attributed their desire for a concealed-weapons permit to the shooting in the church, and they want to be able to provide security for their churches," Baker said.

Jefferson County's applications fell by four in December and rose from 104 in January 2007 to 154 in January 2008. In February 2007, the county had 87, and last month 243 — a 179 percent increase for the month, said Jacki Kelley, spokeswoman for the sheriff.

Don Christensen, executive director of the County Sheriffs of Colorado, said he believes many people sought permits in 2003 when the legislature decided they would be issued by sheriffs, and he thinks the spike is from people now seeking renewals.

Statewide figures comparing new applications to renewals are not available, but in El Paso County, 75 percent of those who sought applications last year sought new permits, not renewals.

Chet Zajak, a security expert and former Aspen police officer who operates CZ Inc. from the Roaring Fork Valley, said providing security and use-of-force training for churches is a growth industry.

Church leaders are becoming aware that their buildings are "soft targets," he said. "Our research shows that between 1974 and 1999, we had about one church shooting a year, if that. Now, between 1999 and 2007, that's gone up over 500 percent."

In many churches, volunteers with law enforcement or military backgrounds often are called on to provide security. Zajak teaches those people and others how to develop comprehensive security programs.

"What it looks like right now is a whole bunch of good-intentioned volunteers who individually do just fine, but we teach people to pray with their eyes open so that everybody is paying attention to what is going on," Zajak said. "Hardening of schools, high schools and churches is finally an emerging area. People cannot ignore it anymore."

The Colorado Springs Police Department is holding a forum on church security Thursday. The training seminar is timely.

On Sunday, a "mentally challenged" man who occasionally attends Holy Apostles Catholic Church brought a sword to the church. He kept it in a sheath and did not threaten anyone. He told an usher, who asked him to take the sword out of the church, that he wanted to have the sword blessed. The man was not arrested.

That kind of incident is prompting many church security personnel to seek concealed-weapon permits and to develop church security plans, Zajak said.

Lol , some of the comments sound so familiar . Could be taken right out of the Brady Playbook .

I really think that this whole thing is playing into people's hysteria. You really don't need a conceal carry permit, just good common sense, I think that this is a bad sign. Next you will hear about people shooting each other over parking spaces, over their space in line at Starbucks, and probably more road rage incidents. The first rule of protection is physical presence, all you need to do is hit the gym, get those biceps and chest pumped up, and that's half the battle. Humans see the physical side of someone; they really don't see a concealed handgun, in my book that's being sneaky, like I have something you don't. It's just the Napoleonic effect, little, small, men with issues, that need protection. If you want to get tough hit the gym and learn a martial art like Krav maga!

Yup , just take up a martial art or work out . That's the best defense against an armed criminal etc .

I gotta know! From 3 posts back, is your name really Henry Bowman? Or did you just adopt it from the book?

I seem to have shut down the discussion over there...

I wondered if that was a high road member, the posts seemed too reasoned for run-of-the-mill liberals ;) (KIDDING!)

No offense taken. :)

This is further proof of my hypothesis that if you frame anti-gun positions as "intolerant, sexist, racist, classist, ageist, and bigoted" it sends antis running for the hills.

I really like that the media is getting the word out on CCW. There are only two ways that criminals are gonna start fearing an armed population. Without media exposure, the less savory elements of society are only gonna figure it out when they start getting shot by citizens. And that way will take a whole lot longer.

Which one of these are you?:barf:

Type A Permit Holder—The HeMan

Arrogant, belligerent, domineering personality tinged with paranoia and self-loathing. Airline pilots, ex military, and rout salesmen permit holders tend toward this profile.

Type B-- The Loser

Type B is characterized by a low education level, usually a low achiever. Also aggressive but in a crasser manor than type A. Guns are a social equalizer. Probably a smoker. Does not own a book.

Type C – The Exhibitionist

Similar to type B, but more likely to open carry in the grocery store wearing cammo to attract attention and show superiority. Drives a pick-up with over sized American flags and gun rights stickers.

Type D – The Man Hunter

Low regard for life. Kills any creature that moves.. Exhilarated by killing and fantasizes about gunning down bad guys. Capital Punishment devotee. Prone to domestic violence. May be Evangelical.

Ooo ooo!!! This is me!...

Except I haven't hunted (I'm hoping to eventually) and the largest thing I've killed was a fish.

I am strongly in favor of Capital Punishment.

I guess I'll have to start beating my fiancee, though- I'm sure she'll understand.

I am an evangelical too!

There's so much bigotry in that post...

Guess it really illustrates how tolerance works, huh?

Sweet Jesus they have some damn good kool-aid there in Colorado...must be NY or Cali vintage....

For the more reasonable folks who live in Colorado, I hope that you don't directly deal with these sheeple...

same story in the Gazette on CCWs.

Applications for concealed-weapon permits up 87% in El Paso County

like this quote from Maketa:
"He said he is not concerned about the growing number of legally armed people in the county. In fact, he said he believes law-abiding citizens make the region safer by getting the permits.

"Actually, I wish it was a higher number, because I know from experience that offenders in the jail system tell me they avoid crimes against people because they know there is a very high concealed-carry rate," Maketa said."

I must defend my hometown again...

As a product of Boulder, I must say that there is a high number of THR caliber people in city as well. Don't believe all the crap that is generated by 15% of the population! One of the best gun shops in the state is located in Downtown Boulder, namely Gunsport Colorado.

Wow JL you put that 'discussion' to bed! that was awesome, but I was hoping they'd come back for more with some other idiot statements about gun-owners being woman-beaters (or man-beaters) because that's the stereotyp they'd like to keep fresh in their minds.

The whole state wasn't painted with that brush. Denver is to Colorado as Cancer is to a living organism.

We just stay out of Denver for the most part. In my case, the places that I do have to visit in Denver are generally of the firearm or automotive persuasion, hence full of like-minded individuals. I also sometimes visit the model train store there (Caboose hobbies, about a half acre of floorspace, and they carry everything from Z-scale on up. very cool place)

Actually, sheriffs in Boulder began to issue concealed carry permits on a de facto shall issue about the same time sheriffs in El Paso County did, which is to say: in the mid-1990s. The loud leftist extremists in Boulder get all the press coverage; they're not, however, the majority.

You must be sampling too much of that Boulder agriculture. Gunsport is a crappy gun store of the first order. Try Jensen's up in Loveland.

That's your opinion and that's OK. This is why I like Gunsport:

- I have been going to Gunsport (old Big Horn Trading Company) for almost 20 years now. My dad bought me my first .22 rifle, centerfire rifle, and .38 revolver from them.

- Gunsport carries almost the complete line of Fiocchi ammo (only place in Denver that I have found) at very good prices.

- My friends stopped by last week and they had Yugo SKS's for the same price as Jensens (also a nice store!).

- Also, how many gun shops let 15 year old HS punks hang out and fondle the merchandise after school? I will always be grateful to them for that. :)

Sorry for the thread drift.
