That's disheartening to hear. Being in my early 60's now, I can honestly say that there is no way I can shoot as well as I once did. But my bad day is as good as a new shooters good one. After "say" 80, they should have to go for re-testing, I see many in FL, who should not be driving let alone shooting. I take my Lab to a dog park, and some of the people were around when they built the Pyramids, They take 10 minutes to get out of the car, it's really criminal to allow someone who has no eyesight or reflexes a gun or a motor vehicle.
One old guy got so tangled up by his little poof dog, that they had to come and untie him. You got to know when to fold them.

Let's see how you feel about that in 20 years....

Not as of a couple of weeks ago. The courts have removed sheriff's discretion.
In any event, the OP is in Placer county, which has been very close to shall issue for a long, long time.
The course of fire will vary from county to county. Lots of instructors in the Sacto/Roseville area. Go to www.calguns.net You will find a section on LTCs and then it is broken down by county.

The Sheriff still gets to decide what the proficiency standards are - so it varies from one county to another. They can't deny you a permit because you "only" want to be able to defend yourself, but just wing an instructor and see if you still get one! :D

I'll feel the same way if I make it to mid 80's. No one should operate anything that can kill people if they have severe motor skill problems.

I hear you. The problem is being objective when we are examining our own situation. Went through that with my parents in the last few years.

It's very likely his attitude on the matter will change, but that doesn't mean the facts of life change too.

Physical and mental deterioration is a fact of life. Our bodies aren't going to be strong, limber, and efficient forever. Nobody likes it, but it's the only fair part of life humanity has ever known. If you get to live, someday you have to die. If you live long enough, your body and mind will deteriorate, and your ability to do things others can do will diminish or be eliminated completely.

Don't like it? Too bad.

I've done a lot of shooting with a lot of much older guys than myself (I'm 66), and I'll tell ya right now I'd much rather have one of those older people shooting next to me than some of the much younger generation I've seen at the range lately. Who is to judge when too old is too old?
