I recently moved from NH to SC. I have a valid resident's CCW permit from NH, and am thinking about getting on in SC. First, since I am no longer a resident of NH, I am wondering if my NH permit is still valid in states that honor a NH resident's permit. This is fairly important issue, because most of the states near my new home in SC honor a NH resident's permit.

The second issue regards the SC CCW permit. It is no big deal to get one, but it requires that you be fingerprinted. I am a 100% law abiding guy and always will be, but there is something about putting my fingerprints in the "system" that bugs me. Maybe I'm being stupid about this, but my wife (who is far less paranoid than me) wondered about it as well.

FYI, SC has a law that lets you carry a handgun in a compartment in your car (ie glove compartment) without any license requirements at all, so if I had to bug out due to something like a hurricane, I could bring some protection with me without having a CCW.

What do you guys think?

No, you do not have a "valid" NH permit. If you are no longer a NH resident, your NH -resident- permit is just so much paper. It is valid nowhere.

You'll find that most states now require you be fingerprinted for a CCW ... and to become a teacher ... drive a truck ... work in a warehouse that handles drugs ... join the military, yadda yadda yadda. Get over it.

Along with the fairly easy to get CCW permit, they also have some pretty stiff penalties here any time you have a firearm involved in a crime of any sort. That could be you if that gun you can carry in your car happens to fall into your pocket and you have to use it anywhere else, and you -do not- have a CCW.

What pisses me off is having to be fingerprinted (again) for renewal with my Florida permit. I got it it Florida and residents renewing do NOT have to be fingerprinted again. But, somehow, since I moved out of state, I must now be a felon and not to be trusted because FL requires non-residents to get fingerprinted every time for renewal. Oh, and I probably scarred or burned my fingerprints, too, because none of that could ever happen in FL, right? Just a $50+ money grab and nothing more.

You are applying for a whole different permit (non-resident -vs- resident), and it's a whole nuther form with it's own set of checkboxes.

I don't know where the $50 comes from ... but it's not from Florida. They are not going to be collecting any $ from where ever it is you are going to be fingerprinted.
