I am a Florida resident and hold the states CCW permit. I'm also my company's Eastern Regional Sales Manager and do a lot of driving throughout the all of the eastern states east of the Mississippi River. My Florida CCW is not valis in South Carolina or anywhere north of DC except Vermont. What can I do to legally carry in SC and these other states? I'm told SC dose not issue non-resident CCW permits. Does anyone have any advise? I risk my job and my freedon when I pack in SC. Thanks... Rich

Regarding your FL permit "not valid anywhere north of DC", if I am reading right, it is valid in DE, PA, WV, OH, IN, MI, NH, as well as a bunch of Western states that are north of DC.

I understand that SC allows glove compartment carry, and carry from car to hotel room without a permit. Please verify this for yourself before acting on it.

If you break the law, don't admit it here. It is not any accepted norm, and we are not, or shouldn't be, cavalier about it.

South Carolina is really dug in about not recognizing states with lesser requirements than their own. Sticking points are 8 hours in the classroom and an instant verification capability.

The fundamental problem in SC is that almost complete regulatory authority and discretion is given to the State Police (SLED), who can make a case that without being strict, they do not achieve their mission as law enforcement. I believe that "shall issue" is their only constraint. They make the rules re licensing, not the legislature. Personally, I think licensing, if we must have any, should be done by the Secretary of State, having no underlying agenda to badger license holders about being "law abiding". They are either legally disqualified or have rightful access to a license. Instead of treating licensing as controlling crime, a job for the police, they would be treating it as certifying legal carrying of guns. Take the class, pay your fee, thank you very much. That's a minor distinction, because the reality is that SLED disqualification records still have to be checked, now on behalf of another department (State). First you wait on SLED and then wait on the FBI response, or lack thereof. What you accomplish though is end SLED's controlling argument that unless done their way, they cannot do the mission of law enforcement. It sounds good but is too easily abused, too easy to be the bully.

The most recent example is getting SLED to be less strict about traffic tickets affecting ones eligibility for license renewal. They were going back too many years to be reasonable, appearing to create excuses to deny license renewals. It was reduced from 10 years to 5 to be more like the previous licensing period (4 years). What they supposedly are measuring is whether one is responsible and law abiding enough to be trusted to abide by gun restrictions. They are not legally obliged to issue a license unless they cannot come up with an excuse why they shouldn't, failing to meet the test of "shall issue". What all that means is they have to avoid appearing arbitrary or inconsistent but can have any rule they want to.

As wdlsguy just said, they recently started issuing permits to non residents that own property in SC. I think you need to show a property tax bill. Maybe you could buy a vacation property there and rent it out.
