Today was windy, but warm. Winds were prevailing from 20 to at least 25 mph with lulls and gusts between 15 and 35 estimated switching from 10:30 to 8 and back.

Took the old CZ to the range today and shot some old handloads featuring Hornady 155 Amax bullets at the 200 yard berm. Once I had figured windage and elevation dope for the prevailing wind, I started shooting pebbles and fragments of old clay pigeons.

Probably shot 100 rounds or so from prone off the short little bipod. The conditions were challenging, and waiting out the gusts and such was an exercise in patience and forebearance. Shooting an accurate rifle with accurate handloads at a leisurely pace was very satisfying.

But in the end I had so much fun. It was just really nice to be outside, and shooting a rifle that I have really come to appreciate. The CZ folks make a fine shootin' iron. It is good to hone one's wind reading skills, even if it is at a short 200 yards.

To me fellas, that's what riflery is about.

I have the same rifle with a Nightforce 5,5X22 and a Harris pod. When I really want to get into my bubble and tack driver mindset this is my rifle of choice. Clover leaf city! Ground Hog and others beware...
Sub MOA is the right way to go.

I'm going to be trying that bullet soon in my 550 American .308 (just need to load some up)... if I get cloverleafs I'll be very happy.

I am a big fan of the CZ 550 Varmint, mine is the Kevlar stock model.

Since I don't reload, finding good ammunition to bring out the rifle's potential is somewhat of a challenge.

I happened to find that Lithuanian 7.62 Nato, with a 145 grain bullet gives me what I consider really good results. I can easily get 1 inch groups of 3 at 100 yards. Groups of 5 may open up to 1 inch or 1-1/4 inch.

I tried out some PRVI match grade ammo with a heavier bullet weight...don't remember the exact grains...and it really did not shoot any better.

I guess one of these days I will buy a box of Black Hills match grade and see how it does. I'm pretty happy with the Lithuanian. The only drawback is it's getting rather hard to find now. I don't see it at all at gun shows any more. Have to get it off Gunbroker now.
