I've been looking around "my neck of the woods" for a good gunshop and well, all I've been able to find are pawn shops and Wallmart. Does anyone here know of a good gunshop near Champaign/Urbana IL?

Yes, I know of several good shops just south of you. Are you looking for a particular type of gun? That makes a difference. Most shops kind of specialize in a certain type ie... AR's, surplus, handguns or shotguns etc.

I don't know of any near Champaign/Urbana but there's a really good one in Pekin Illinois (south of Peoria). The guy has always had an example of anything I'm looking for in stock. (new and used). I think he advertises that he carries 2500 guns in stock. (Pekin Gun and Sporting Goods) It's a fairly decent drive for you but it's better than anything over here near Bloomington/Normal.

Regards,
Dave

I moved from CU in 1991, so I'm not up to date. At that time there was a gun shop in St. Joseph (first town east on 74).

There's a nice range (Darnell's) in Bloomington, with a gunshop. When I took a class there a couple years ago I met a guy from CU who said that was where he came regularly to shoot.

Connect up with the Champaign County Rifle Assoc. (http://www.gunssavelife.com/) -- they could probably tell you.

If you live in our area we invite you to attend our monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at the Park Inn, 2408 N. Cunningham Ave, Urbana, Illinois at 7pm. (6pm for dinner and conversation)

Sure wish I'd known about them when I was there.

First off, thanks for the replies

BTM: I am kind of looking for nothing in general and everything in general (aka handguns, hunting rifles, shotguns, mil-surps, ect.) :)

lee n. field: I used to go to that gunshop (Toms Gunshop I believe). Just the kind of place I am looking for. However they closed in the early 90's and I have not been able to find another. Also, thanks for the link.

"The Pawn Shop" in Rantoul usually has some interesting things, more so than most of the average pawn shops around there. He'll deal if he's in the mood.

There's another shop in St Joe, can't remember the name, but it's the same guy that ran the "Sport 101" shop in Urbana. It's on the left as you go east on 150, not quite all the way to St Joe I think. (Dave's gun shop ?)

There's a guy in st Joe that sells reloading components, usually has a fair supply of powder/bullets/primers etc. usually has a decent supply of cast bulelts in too. He'll order stuff in also, guns or whatever. Send me a PM or e-mail and I'll give you his name.

There's a shop just across the line in Indianna, south of the Interstate about 10 or 15 miles. "Darrels Gun Shop" I believe. he has a variety of things, rifles, pistols, shotguns. Call before going over, I think he's closed on one weekday, but is open on one weekday evening. You can buy long guns from him being from out of state, but handguns will have to go to a local dealer for you to take possesion. It's worth the drive. He's usually pretty well stocked on cast bullets and other reloading stuff.

Wooters Sport Shop in Findlay, IL has a good selection though he specializes in sporting shotguns. I believe he is the biggest Benelli, Browning & Beretta dealer in IL. Also sells alot of Kimber .45 pistols.
Arcola Guns in Arcola has alot of AR15's and AR parts.
Mixed bag good shops a little further south:
Bennett Tire & Gun Windsor, Max's Firearms & Coin Shelbyville & Shelbyville Firearms both of the latter have some good surplus firearms too.
Good Shopping!

There's always Ray O'Herrons in Danville. They have a pretty good selection, plus holsters and other accessories. I don't think you need to be LE to get in, but I'm not sure.

On US 150 before you get to St. Joe there is Dave's Gun Shop on the North side of the road.

There's a pawn shop on University that has an assortment of firearms. There's a gunshop in Westville and another out of Shelbyville. Someone mentioned the Rantoul pawn shop too.

Third for the Pawn Shop in Rantoul, Pat and Theresa are friendly and professional. Bonus is that the shop is virtually a museum. Lots to look at.

Went to the Gold and Diamond Exchange on University in Urbana today. Had a number of shotguns, some pistols, .22 rifles, 2 ARs, and an M1.

A gun shop in Urbana -- the mind boggles.

(Actually, my mind boggled pretty hard some years ago when I heard the Todd Satterthwaite was Mayor. I remember him running a pinball arcade.)

Thats a nice place - I visited recently and almost left with that Garand.

Their prices are high on everything I've seen there. Sometimes very high.

I did not leave with the garand as it was priced at a little over a grand!

Even their used glocks were almost the same price one sees for new ones (a little over 400 bucks). We need more gunshops in CU!!!

I wish Pekin Gun had a website...i loved to go in there for nothing more than window shopping just to see what they had that day

I have made purchases from both Dave's Firearms on Rt. 150 and Gold and Diamond Exchange in Champaign. Sticker prices can be high at G&D Exchange so all I can say is bring cash and make an offer. I purchased a pistol NIB from them and paid a fair price. It cost less than ordering a new firearm and paying for shipping and a transfer. I try to visit Dave's every 6-8 weeks to see what else is new under the glass. The owner has been friendly and allowed me to handle and drop the hammer (with permission) on pistols that interested me, and has offered to special order certain powders which are expensive to ship to a residence.

My local FFL dealer is far less expensive than these brick and mortar stores, PM me if you would like his contact information.
