To all you knowledgeable SKS guys: Have you ever heard of the SKS model that accepts AK mags as being dangerous? A fella told me that the barrels are "pinned" to the reciever with a very weak pin unlike military SK's. Thus making them weak and dangerous. Is this true and if so can that be remedied. ( read certain!)

Not true at all.

If the SKS can accept AK mags from the factory, it will be no more dangerous than any other factory SKS out there. If it was modified by a previous owner, then buyer beware. But the M and D model SKSs are not unsafe as far as SKS rifles go....

Pinned barrels are no different than any other rifle with a pinned barrel. Some SKSs came with threaded barrels, and some came pinned. There's no safety issue between the two, assuming they have not been modified or heavily abused.

I don't understand what he even means by non-military SKS's. They were all ex-military surplus as far as I know. Why would using a detachable magazine vs the stock magazine suddenly make the gun unsafe. What aftermarket detachable high-capacity magazines will do is make your SKS unreliable. Best to leave them alone.

greenlion, most SKS's were military rifles. some of the Chinese rifles Most made by Norinco were made for export to the U.S. market.

As for the OP. A pinned barreled SKS is just as safe as a screwed in baerreled SKS.

Thanks Fellas, You've relieved my concern. I don't plan on goin' to war ( unless its nec. ) with it, but I do plan on shooting it plenty. Part of the "stash" if you know what I mean. Again, Thanks

The only thing that could even be considered close to unsafe with the SKS would be the trigger group. Now that would mean the rifle had been shot so many times that the sear block is worn to a negative engagement. I have never seen one worn far enough to be a problem but I can certainly see where it would be possible. A very simple trigger job on the SKS not only makes sure there is no problem but really cleans up the trigger. Shot mine for years before doing the trigger and wish now that I had done it the day I bought my first one. All of mine and all of my friends have nice smooth triggers now.
