I have an old Norinco SKS and have heard rumors there is an adapter that you can buy that allows you to use detachable AK mags.

Has anyone ever heard of this and or any info would be great!

Thanks in advance...

In order to use detachable mags, you have to also replace other parts with US made versions for 922 compliance.

That being said most people seem to find the 20rd Tapco mags work best.

BB,

Some Chicom SKSes came from the factory designed to use AK mags. There aren't any conversion kits to make other SKSes like that. It would require significant machining to do so.

The majority of aftermarket SKS mags suck and greatly reduce reliability. I have read here on THR or TFL that the new Tapco 20 round mags are pretty reliably, but have not tried them myself.

But for maximum reliability, stick with the original 10 round mag.

I know way too much about SKSs to be normal. Anyway I think you were referring to one of two things. The first thing is ,as has been mentioned above, the SKS-D and SKS-M were made by Norinco and they take AK mags. They take only AK mags and never had a fixed mag. The other thing is that Cobrey made some mags a while back that had an adapter and they looked a lot like an AK mag. Personally if you want to carry more than ten rounds in an SKS I would buy the Tapco mags. They fit with no modification and the two that I ordered (5rds for hunting) have worked fine without a hiccup.

Here are some picture to clarify.

The New Tapco SKS mags work great! I've tried some of the older steel mags and even ProMags but they jammed a lot. The Tapco polymer 20rnd mag has been 100% so far in my Yugo SKS!

Stick to the stock 10 round magazines and use stripper clips.
I second that!
You can't run out of ammo with stripper clips.

While you are messing around with a 30-round duckbill on a rifle with no bolt latch, I will put 100 rounds down range with strippers!

problem is that my original 10rd mag burned up in a fire, I bought another but it simply will NOT fit, sad thing is I busted the damn stock trying to get the trigger assembly popped back in with it together. It's toast split completely in two. It now has a nylon folder on it (yes it's officially bubba'd)

I've had it for about 15 years or so. I have an aftermarket 30rd on it now that doesn't jam on me a bit. (don't remember the manufacturer)

I can use the strippers just fine in it and can fill it up in about 5 seconds. I was just liking the idea of possibly having more than a few loaded mags handy. I really don't like Ak's as far as accuracy goes, I'll take my sks anyday.

so how do I find out if that cobrey thing works?

I'd love to have another working 10rd, might consider that 20rd one as well.

Over on Simonov.net they have directions on how to convert your SKS to take AK mags. To me it looks like a somewhat challenging project, but I'm reasonably sure I could pull it off. Personally however, I'd rather just buy an AK.

As I recall, the Cobray adapter required only one hole be drilled and tapped on the bottom of the receiver to attach it. The adapter allowed the use of actual AK mags. I ordered a catalog from Cobray a number of years ago but they wouldn't send me one because I wasn't FFL.

Does one need to use aftermarket furniture in order to use the Tapco DuckBill mags? or do they work with the original wood stock?

I was under the assumption I had to M4gerize the sks in order to use the duckbills. I want combat tupperware for sks, but nobody makes any that will accept a bayo WITHOUT a pistol grip, so...

I do have plenty of strippers, but would like to try the duckbills. Anybody else have experience with them?

Yes, to make the rifle into an "Assualt Rifle" yes I know that definition is a steaming load, you have to play the 922r game and remove a certain number of foreign parts and replace those with domestic parts... 10 or less foreign parts.. yada yada.. etcetera...

The duckbills work on every SKS I have seen them on. That includes TAPCO m4gerys, Choate Dragunovs, original Norincos, and original Yugos.

IIRC the tapco mags are designed specifically for the T6 stock, but will work in any stock, if the stock is fitted.

So, you may have to shave a couple millimeters of the side walls of the magwell to get the tapco mags to fit just right. The standard magwell tends to be a little bit too narrow and will squeeze the mag and can cause it to fail. Those mags swell up a good bit when fully loaded.

I would like to try one, just to see. I don't plan on converting SKS to EBR status. For the money spent to do it right, I could buy another SKS.

However it would be nice just to have a mag or two to play with. What I would really like, as stated before, is a monte carlo or dragunov type polymer stock that will accept the bayo. Too bad nobody makes one.

Since I just got an extra wood stock at a gun show for my Yugo, perhaps I will pick up a detachable mag to play with. Thanks

Here is a pic of my toy. I consider it a great gun for anything under 200 yards. The trick with a receiver cover scope mount us to either drill holes to the receiver and secure it with brackets, or use side tightening screws and fit the mount so it takes a rubber hammer to get it on, and then tighten the screws. Mine holds 2 MOA out to 200 with Lapua or handloads and maybe 4 MOA with Wolf. Choate Dragunov stock, Murray's firing pin, Weaver 4x (pic has red dot mounted), Wolff gunsprings, Harris bipod and hand filed and fitted scope mount. Not a bad little package for the $260 I paid. That breaks down to $130 for the gun NIB, $80 for the stock, $35 for firing pin and springs, and $16 used scope on Ebay. I'm not counting the bipod because it is shared among several guns.
