Well, I hope I'm in the right place this time. Tried this earlier and it wound up in the handguns area. Yeah, I'm new. What can I say?

I recently purchased a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 still in the cosmoline. I disassembled, cleaned, oiled and reassembled making sure to check the firing pin setting.

I haven't had a chance to get it to the range yet but I've tested it with snap caps for loading, firing, ejecting, etc. When feeding a new round I find the bolt is very difficult to close - takes a good smack to get it down. If I partially open the bolt and re-close it operates perfectly.

I've disassembled and reassembled the bolt and again checked the firing pin with no change. Have I missed something or is this the nature of the weapon.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice anyone can give. Feel free to answer to my e-mail if you like: [email protected].

take a drill with a 20 ga bore brush on an extension and soak the bore brush in hoppes 9 then with your bolt out run that bore brush in the chamber area and clean it out, thatl take care of your issue

Common problem. Quick solutions. It is probably not truly cleaned and probably could be polished. Aside from thus board search youtube for some excellent videos on prepping a cosmolined mosin for smooth shooting. Notably iraqveteran8888 has some fantastically detailed Mosin videos from how to get all the cosmo out to which specific areas to polish to obtain a smooth bolt. Enjoy! The mosin is a very fun rifle to shoot.

Check the extractor. The M-N has what amounts to a push feed where the round is chambered, then the bolt closed with the extractor snapping over the rim. The extractor may be rough, bent, or have grease in it so it doesn't move out freely. Once the extractor catches the rim, the bolt and cartridge can be pulled back together and pushed forward so the cartridge will enter the chamber easily and the bolt will turn down and lock with no problem.
