FEC Reveals Brady Campaign $211,000 Political Hypocrisy, Says Second Amendment Foundation

Contact: Alan Gottlieb of the Second Amendment Foundation, 425-454-7012; Web site: http://www.saf.org

BELLEVUE, Wash., Dec. 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- "When they aren't trying to steal our gun rights, they're trying to steal our elections, but this time they got caught." So said Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, following a report from the Federal Election Commission that the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence just agreed to pay a $26,000 fine for failing to properly disclose more than $200,000 it spent in attempts to unseat two members of Congress during the 2000 election.

"According to the FEC, the Brady Campaign's so-called Voter Education Fund didn't report $111,777 it spent opposing Kentucky Rep. Ernest Fletcher, or the $99,731 it spent trying to beat Rep. Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania," Gottlieb noted. "Can you imagine the outrage that anti-gunners would be spewing if a gun rights organization failed to report more than $211,000 in campaign expenditures, especially if the money was spent to unseat some gun control fanatic?

"If nothing else," Gottlieb observed, "this disclosure certainly bares one more hypocrisy of the extremist gun control movement. Anti-gunners traditionally complain that firearms civil rights organizations spend truckloads of money on elections. Here is a case where the Brady Campaign's own expenditures on two specific races suggest that the gun control lobby deserves the same level of scrutiny it demands for gun rights groups.

"In just two races," Gottlieb noted, "the anti-gun lobby spent more than $200,000, and then didn't properly report it. What did they spend elsewhere around the country, what are they spending now, and is that being properly reported?

"The public deserves to know about this money, where it comes from, and where it's going," he stated. "Of course, we all know why such money gets spent. The gun control lobby wants its puppets in public office at all levels working to erase the firearm civil rights we all enjoy, whether we choose to exercise those rights or not.

"Now there's proof" Gottlieb concluded, "that the extremist gun control lobby spends enormous amounts of money to steal elections the way they would steal our guns, by defeating candidates and veteran lawmakers who are dedicated to protecting all of our civil rights."

The Second Amendment Foundation is the nation's oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 600,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control. SAF has previously funded successful firearms-related suits against the cities of Los Angeles; New Haven, CT; and San Francisco on behalf of American gun owners, a lawsuit against the cities suing gun makers & an amicus brief & fund for the Emerson case holding the Second Amendment as an individual right.

Re the following, from the FEC web site:

2. MUR 5345

RESPONDENTS: Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence – Voter Education Fund, Mark Ingram, treasurer
COMPLAINANT: Internal
SUBJECT: Failure to file timely 24-Hour Notices for independent expenditures
DISPOSITION: Conciliation Agreement: $26,000 civil penalty*
The Committee made independent expenditures totaling $211,509 opposing candidates in Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Respondents violated the Act by failing to file timely two 24-Hour Notices for these independent expenditures. Respondents will cease and desist from violating this provision of the Act.

DOCUMENTS ON PUBLIC RECORD: Conciliation Agreement (dated October 10, 2003); Certification of vote by Commissioners (dated October 17, 2003).

*There are four administrative stages to the FEC enforcement process:

1. Receipt of proper complaint 3. "Probable cause" stage
2. "Reason to believe" stage 4. Conciliation stage

It requires the votes of at least four of the six Commissioners to take any action. The FEC can close a case at any point after reviewing a complaint. If a violation is found and conciliation cannot be reached, then the FEC can institute a civil court action against a respondent.

Had the NRA been the "guilty party", is it likely that the violations involved might have/would have risen to the level of criminal violations, and or that any "conciliation agreement" reached would have involved a more substantial penalty?

This aspect aside, what of what seems to be the media "softshoe" with regard to the ILLEGAL antics of The Brady Campaign mob? How much ink would have been spilled, how many trees cut to make the paper that would have been used to describe the evils of The National Rifle Association, and THEIR evil deeds?

So, essentially, The Brady Campaign just had to fork over a $26,000 "filing fee."

Dandy.

Has anyone considered starting an anti-gun pro-gun organization?

You could call it "Americans Opposed to the Right to Keep and Bear Arms" or something silly. We could espouse obviously contradictory anti-gun language, and get media coverage up the ying yang until they figured us out <g> and then we'd get lot's of coverage.

Jimpeel:

I hope that they enjoy what you sent them, but curious as to exactly what it was that you sent.

Isn't it sort of a shame that the FEC cou;dn't or wouldn't bring CRIMINAL CHARGES, though it might well be that this violation does not rise to the level of the criminal law.

Jimpeel:

What comes up at the link you showed looks non-paprtisan enough for most purposes.
