Change Recoil Spring in HK USP

I have a USP45F that I want to change the recoil spring except I don' t know how. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this? I know the recoil/buffer is that double spring thingamajig but how do you separate it? I also guess that the bigger of the two is the one that I want to replace.

Plus, when I got my order from Wolff Springs, there were two springs. The large one for the Recoil, but I can't figure out what the smaller one is for or where it goes.
 
I just put a stronger recoil spring into my Para Ordnance P12-45. I am hoping that the new spring will stop the jams I have had with this pistol. I also got an extra spring from Wolff with the recoil spring. I suspect it is for the firing pin but am not sure.

The smaller one might be a firing pin spring.

When I ordered a couple of Wolf 16# springs for my 1911, they threw a couple of firing pin springs in.

I'm not sure how to get that spring off. I haven't felt the need to do it yet for my USP (but I probably should eventually :uhoh: )
 
Did you buy a recal kit if so its either a hammer spring or fireing pin spring..

Remoce the clip on fron of the recoil rod slid off the plastic washer change spring then reverse and put back together. I would order the new c-clip b4 you try to take other one off.
 
Maybe I should ask, "How the ^&$% do you get that front clip off?" IT's like you have to break it off. Plus, with the spring in there, it's hard to hold the washer down to get to the clip.
 
To change fireing pin spring you drive out the farther in roll pin in the slide pull out pin change spring drive roll pin back in.. basically you have to pry off the clip this is where your 3rd hand comes in handy :)
 
I finally got the spring changed. It was easier for me to try and uncoil the spring around the washer to get it off. Once it was off, I could then try and take out the clip without the extra tension. I ended up bending it pretty good but I got it off.

Putting it back together was okay once I got the spring on but it sure was feisty. Put the washer on and then used pliers to hold it in place to put back the clip. Then I used another set of pliers to bed the clip back into shape.

I really don't wanna do this again. It was a pain. BTW, I used a 20 pound Wolff spring and I think that's one of the reasons it was so tough. I can't even drop the slide with my thumb anymore. Have to pull it back to let it go.
 
Glad to hear ya got it done.. Just wondering why did you change it ? Hk says if it aint broke dont fix it.. Think ill change mine at about 5k rounds .. How many do you have though yours?

Also watch taking the recoil assy out next time if the C Clip decides not to hold you wont know till you take it out and trys to shoot across the room :)
 
I had about 7000+ rounds through my USP. Maybe 10K+. I don't remember exactly. THe main reason I changed the spring is because it started jamming on some of my reloads, especially the SWC. It would go almost all the way into battery but the last 1/8" of an inch. I would have to use my thumb to make sure it "clicked" all the way forward before it would fire.

When I fired my RN reloads, it works fine, but I don't wanna take the chance. I mean, with a 10 round mag, it would jam 5 times. I know it was the bullet but I took this time and learned a lot more about my gun.

Also, where does one get a new "clip" should this one fall off?
 
Gotta wonder about some of youse guys... I know of two USP 9s, one w 50K+ and another w 75K+ rounds through them, still w original springs (in guns and mags), and still working just fine. ;)

BrokenArrow i suppose my car could go that long between oil changes i know my work van has on the trans filter (espically casueit aint mine ) Just cause they can dont mean they should to each his own on maintance
 
I know whay ya mean, but some get carried away...

I change recoil springs on my 1911s every 3K, on my FNHPs every 5K. The spring unit on the USP compacts has a service life of at least 20K, the full size USPs at least that or more. A lot more.

No, not 'zactly... ;)

They will go longer than most springs/units in other guns before adverse effects are noticed. I know what HK says they can do; dunno what HK says is the recommended change rate.

Changing em early sure won't hurt anything.

Kinda like the roll pins in the two piece slides of the classic SIGs. SIG says change em every 5K rounds (and not to re use them if you take them out earlier for any reason) for longest service life of the slide/frame. You can go much longer, or never do it at all, but the slide/frame wear will be accelerated and they won't last as long as if ya do change em every 5K.

That was a hassle for some high volume SIG shooters who whined to SIG, so we got the one piece slides w a solid pin that requires no pin change for about 50K.

Nobody's manuals really tell ya enough? Should be more info on stuff like this? We don't need a full armorers course, but more info than we do get would be nice? :D
