I was looking at buying a pump action Charles Daly 12 ga. I don't know much about the brand, but the gun looked to be nice with a camo finish and ported barrel. This would be in lieu of a Remington 870 with a synthetic stock... Any advice on which would be better? Any information on the Charles Daley brand would be appreciated. Thanks.

Out of business currently. Brand has been around marketing guns for about 125 years, last makers of the brand were cheap. Nothing to be recommended about them

Get the 870.

Charles Daley never made a gun. They were strictly importers. Quality went from superb with the old Prussian guns ca 1900 to made in The Third World knockoffs that break often and have no spare parts.

US made shotguns of known quality and great design are neither scarce nor expensive. Get an 870,500,88,37 etc and have something with generations of use....

Imported shotguns, especially inexpensive ones, more often than not turn out to be "orphans" after a few years - no warranty repair available, few or no sources of parts for repairs, spare barrels, etc. after the importers shift to a different manufacturer or worse, go out of business. KBI/Charles Daly went out of business in 2010.

Do yourself a favor and buy a STILL IN PRODUCTION shotgun from one of the major American manufacturers. That way you'll have access to an abundance of accessories, spare barrels, parts and lots of people who can work on it should something go wrong. Yes, you'll be just one more Joe Ordinary with one of the millions of Mossberg 500s, Remington 870s, Maverick 88s or whatever. But there are lots of advantages to staying mainstream.

Remember, there's cheap, and then there's inexpensive. There's never a good reason to buy 'cheap.'

jmho,

+1 for buying the gun still being made.

My old man has a Chas. Daley SxS 20 gauge imported from Spain. Not sure of the manufacturer. Nice gun, but I don't want to try and find parts for it.

Yeah, go with the Remington. Charles Daly is out of business and you will never be able to find parts for your shotgun.

There's been a few threads about that recently, even.

A cousin has a 20 gauge CD pump and loves it, for what it is... a cheap but reliable shotgun he doesn't mind bouncing around in the trunk. I imagine it would be hard to get replacement parts, now.

I hate the painted on logo, though.

Yeah, unless you really know Daley guns it's better to go with known still in business makers.
I've got a friend who collects and trades in Daley's.
Only doubles and drillings up to around 1920.
But, he knows Daley guns like the palm of his hand down to the last detail.

The Spanish makers are still in business -proof marks will tell you which one it is - AyA, Grulla, Arrietta, Ugartechea, Arrizabalaga, Zabalas Hermanos, etc., all build quality guns
