Charles Daly 1911 EMS Field Grade question

I am thinking of a CD EMS and have questions
It seems that many people here and 1911.com are not either happy with their CDs or have heard of some that have been lemons.

That being said, I an thinking of trading a springfield XD in .40 for a CD EMS to use as a CCW piece. The xd is just to bulk to carry. I want something slim, ambi and powerful. So far the 1911 platform and some other models (firestorm, beretta to chunky, HK to large) are all I can find. CD fits the bill perfectly.

I shoot often and practice much but still will only put about 400 rds a month through this weapon. I think it will hold up to my level of usage.

I have a question. I have a Wolf Commander 22# spring I used in my XD. Will this spring fit and work well to reduce recoil in the CD EMS?????

Well, good luck if you buy a CD... you will need it!

I would advise against putting extra-heavy springs in a .45 ACP 1911. They won't reduce recoil, and could hurt reliability. I'd guess 18-20 lbs would be the right recoil spring weight range for a 4" .45 ACP 1911.

I don't know where to begin to offer advice... First of all, the Dalys have a spotty reliability record. I'm a big 1911 fan and have never said a bad word about Daly guns but their record speaks for itself. For some folks, they are fine but of the reasonably major manufacturers, they are certainly behing Springfield, Kimber, Colt etc...

Now considering the reliability range of the Daly 1911s, are you sure you want to trade what should be a 99.99% reliable arm for something with questionable reliability? And if you trade in your reliable firearm for the Daly and it turns out to need some work, do you have something else to use while the Daly is away?

If at all possible, I would suggest you try to strap on a 1911 and holster to see how much more convinient if feels. Granted, the grip on the 1911 will be a bit trimmer but the XD is lighter and has about the same overall slide and grip length so I doubt the EMS will be any less 'bulky'. Another thing to consider is that a shorter slide doesn't help much with concealment but a shorter grip is easier to conceal. In other words, if you can carry a Commander-sized gun, you can carry a full-size gun 99% as easily and that opens up a lot more possibilities.

If you do want to go to a 1911 platform gun, I think a Springfield MilSpec would be a much better value than the Daly. You can add whatever features you want as $$$ and time allows and I assure you it will turn out to be a much higher quality gun.

I have a Daly EFS that I have had for about three months now. When I first got it it would fail to go into battery at least once a magizine. I replaced the factory recoil spring with a 20 lb Wolff spring. It now shoots like a champ.
I can mix a magizine with two or three different types of ammo including hollow points. Problem free for about 300 hundred rounds. It is a great range gun and I would trust it as a carry gun but I don't often carry it because it is just too darn heavy. I switch carry btween a Kel Tec P11, a Taurus PT 145 and an HK 40 sw compact. Even the compact is a little heavy.

I have a CD that has close to 8k rounds through it now w/o any failure since I changed the extractor to Wilson's. The original broke @ about 700rds. I bought it to be used as a base gun for IPSC competitions. And that's all I use it for. For SD/HD weapon, I carry a Glock 17 w/ standard capacity mag (i.e. high-cap mag). Glock is the only gun design that never gave me grief any (I have 2 G17 and a G26)). Even my high dollar STI ($1200 ), Colt series 80, Para P16, all had issues at the beginning. That said, For serious biz, I will not recommend any 1911 w/o some fine tuning done! If your XD had proven reliable to you, I say keep it! Or trade it for a Glock of whatever flavor you like.

Will your frustrations be less if this happens on a Colt? Someone I know had that same thing happen on his Colt (series 80 officer's model). And guess what! Colt never admitted fault and didn't do a thing for him. I know 12 weeks maybe a long wait, but at least CD took care of it.

had an older used colt break the "legs" off the bushing but i have no way of knowing how many rounds had been thru that gun. it took 15 yrs. before i bought another 1911 (the cd) way to much dejavue (sp?) . have a kimber now much better so far but i still carry my glock mostly also. i just think that if you want a 1911 and can swing a few more $$ don't give yourself the extra possible aggravation..
