I have a problem with an auction weapon that I happen to win the bid. It is a Charles Daly 50 cal percussion thats barrel is definently in bad shape I have been able to remove alot of the rust but it is starting to look hopeless. Well atleast I am getting some good exersize. I havent been able to remove the breech plug or the nipple box( the screw is frozen on the box) I have soaked it in every bore cleaner that I have and have read about all kinds of methods to get the rust out from coke to lemon juice but if any one else has any ideas I sure would like to hear them. If it is only a new barrel I would even try that if I can find one that will fit. Thanks for any help you can give.

There's many ways to try to clean up a barrel.
But it sounds like your barrel is pretty far gone so I'll just skip all of that.
You would need to know the manufacturer before you could even begin to find a factory replacement, and finding a used one could be difficult if not nearly impossible.
So your next options are to either build a new barrel, have the old barrel re-bored or to install a barrel liner.
Building a new barrel involves adding everything needed to make it fit and function with your stock which can be somewhat expensive.
Re-boring is a less expensive option but the barrel may need to become a different caliber, or at least require a slightly larger size round ball.
And the barrel can also be made into a versatile as well as a very desirable "smoothbore rifle" too!
Ed Rayl is a well known barrel maker that re-bores barrels for a very reasonable price.
He lives in Gassaway, W. Va. and can be reached at 304-364-8269. :)

Where was the barrel/gun made? If it is Made in Italy we can possibly help you out. If it is made in Spain it was probably produced by CVA under contract for Daly.

If it was made in Spain it was probably manufactured by Ardesa under contract to CVA. CVA was an importer, not a manufacturer. Ardesa made guns for many US importers under a number of different names. Charles Daly may have imported them directly from Ardesa or bought them from CVA or another importer.

To increase my own knowledge base about the Charles Daly muzzle loaders as well as everyone else's, could you tell us which Italian manufacturer made the one's from Italy?
Whether DWB's rifle is Italian or Spanish made, I'm also wondering if there were any cross over models that were also produced under the manufacturer's own brand name or not?
And if DWB could post a picture of the rifle, that would also be much appreciated since I've never seen one.
This could be an opportunity to learn something new that would also be useful to others in the future.
And folks will also be able to access whatever info. is posted by simply performing a search of the THR BP sub-forum database. ;)

the best method to remove the nipple is to spray it inside and out with this sythetic graphite lube and heat it up with mapp gas torch and dog your nipple wrench and really put some torque to it. it'll
either snap right off or turn depending on how much metal is there. either way youll get it loose enough to turn . if it snaps i suggest you take it to be drilled out by a gunsmith ..good luck and happy holidays

Outdoor Sports Headquarter's, Inc. (OSHI) owned the Charles Daly brand from around 1976 to 1996. During that time they sold blackpowder rifles that were made by Investarm in Italy (imported by Kassnar Imports) and Ardesa in Spain (imported by CVA, I think).

I am more familiar with the Investarm guns as I worked for my father at Kassnar Imports before I started KBI in 1989. We acquired the Charles Daly brand in 1997.

Investarm is more well known as the manufacturer of Lyman's guns in Italy.
