Well, here in my area it has finally happened, a pizza delivery driver shot and killed an alleged robber, likely in self defense, story is new, not enough detail yet....

http://www.wsoctv.com/news/15008752/detail.html

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A pizza delivery man shot and killed a person trying to rob him late Tuesday, police said.

Investigators said the Domino’s Pizza worker delivered a pizza at the Greenbryre Apartments on Spanish Quarter Circle, off Sharon Amity Road, around 9 p.m. As he was walking back to his car, two men tried to rob him at gunpoint, officers said.

The pizza deliverer pulled out his own gun and shot one of the men. Officers haven’t said what happened to the other would-be robber.

Authorities said 25-year-old Demetrius Wright died at the scene.

Police currently have the pizza delivery man in custody, but they have not charged him, presumably because they are trying to determine if the shooting was a case of self-defense.

We've had several attempted robberies of drivers in the last year, so I'm not surprised more drivers would be protecting themselves, only a matter of time before the robber was met with a prepared citizen. Hope this proves to be a justified shoot and the driver doesn't receive any negative consequences from it and is able to move on with his life...

I might have done that before?

I have worked for Dominos in the past and when Va first issued the ccw well I started packing. If it looked bad which was a limited area where I worked, I would place my 1911 on top of the Pizza inside the hot bag(smart dumb right wrong or indiffrent). Not so long after ccw's came out the local PD started searching pizza delivery cars for guns stating that delivery cars were considered comercial vehicles. Of corse we would get pulled for the oldest "we just want to pull you over" trick in the book......."Uh sir I stoped you for weaving with in your lane.......do you have firearms in the car?"

It didnt take too long before that action quit as a court case revealed we were not driving comercial vehicles.

Any way I never had to pull the gun and BTW I do realize my error in that particular form of ccw and I was young but still no excuses

Man, just a few more instances like this and you'd think criminals would stop robbing pizza guys. At least, that's the idea. I sure as hell wouldn't try to rob them, knowing that, from the stories popping up left and right on THR, quite a few keep guns in the car. Plus, I like pizza, and might want to order from them again one day. Robbing their delivery employees might put a damper on future transactions.

It may be coincidence but it seems like store robberies are going down and bank robberies are going up. Or around here anyway. No guns in Banks. BG has less threat of being shot by a customer or employee.

Did VA at the time not allow CCW in commercial vehicles for some reason? What was the law on that? Is it still that way?

Curious minds want to know....thanks.

Well, don't we always see stuff like that in movies/tv, like when DiNero puts that gun in the big gulp in that Showtime movie w/ Eddie Murphy, before they go into the bad guys shop, so he can get to it quick but look inconspicuous? Maybe if it was in a pizza bag holster, err uh pocket holster, maybe it wouldn't have been so bad. :D

I wish I was aware enough and responsible enough to think about and make good choices when I was driving pizza. Of course I was too young to own a handgun when I was driving pizza, but I was fortunate not to have any issues. Not long after I left, one of my coworkers had his rental car stolen and was beaten up pretty bad.

I applied for a Pizza Delivery job in VA and they told me no CCWs allowed. It's not that they didn't care, they were just worried about the liability. The weren't insured for that kind of thing. I understood, but declined the job.

Later I met a guy working for Domino's who was in Earl's Gunshop in Charlottesville, VA that was buying an Ithaca Model 37 riot gun for his route.
Can't say I blame him.

Its a federal law I think with state laws to back it up. I am uncertian where to find the actual printed law the law then and now are still the same. The local Pd had a guy working with us(just part timming) and we all carried so I am sure the guy ran his mouth at work which is how it all got started. The comercial vehicel law was just a way to impress the judges/bosses or who ever. 1 guy got busted judge ruled he was legal then cop got pissed and told the store manager then the no ccw rules came out as company policy.

Any way I drove tractor trailers after the pizza thing was done and that is where I learned that ccw-firearms are illegal in comercial vehicals.

Ok I just did a quick search on the net the federal regs nolonger regulate guns aparently so its just state laws now........it has been 12 years since I did the truck driving thing though.

Quote: Domino's where I worked had an anti carry policy as well.

I'll plead the fifth as to whether I followed it for the 3 mos I worked for them.

If you don't work for them now, what are you worried about? Are they that influencial??

Ok, now one local station is starting to screw this up! Anyone in the area, or that cares enough, please tell them they're not getting this right. Here is the email I sent them, including a link to their story.

Please note, the print story isn't bad, it's the video, where they say the driver was involved in a MURDER, and the assailant was referred to as the VICTIM!!!!

Regarding this story: The dangers of delivery drivers - http://www.wcnc.com/news/topstories/stories/wcnc-010908-mrn-deliverydangers.8ace3c0.html

I just saw your midday broadcast and am outraged at the way it was reported, regarding Chris Justice reading the story over the air. I did not see anything on the print version that indicated what was said over the air.

Chris Justice said that a pizza delivery driver was involved in a MURDER! And that Demetrius Wright was the VICTIM!!!!

Are you kidding me? Unless the police come out and file charges against the delivery driver for MURDER, then Demetrius Wright is NOT a VICTIM!

The Pizza Delivery Driver is the Victim of an alleged armed robbery, which is a threat of deadly force, he reacted in kind to defend himself, according to original reports. Demetrius Wright was the attacker, not the victim, according to reports.

These are huge differences, PLEASE GET IT RIGHT before you air this story again, and you should really retract what you said. You are damaging a lot of people here. Imagine if the driver is proved to be justified in defending himself and you called him a MURDERER on air. Imagine if Demetrius was an armed gunman robbing people, and you're playing him out to be the VICTIM.

There was an alleged armed robbery, the driver is the victim, Demetrius is the alleged ARMED robber, until the police come out and say anything more substantial, that's all you should be saying. Let's not forget that one of the armed robbers got away, last I heard. He still needs to be brought to justice, and we as a community don't need you out there saying his partner in crime was the VICTIM!!!!!

There is a link to the web/print reporters email on the story page, or you can select on air news team from the dropdown on this contact page:

ETA: Now, I see the original link from WSOC is posting the driver's name, it's the same link I posted before, but now it includes the driver's name. Google the driver, the matching name's address is 2.6 miles from where the incident happened, and they already showed a picture of the house on tv, where the reporter was trying to get a comment. I've emailed them and am calling them now.

I just talked to a manager in the newsroom at WSOC and she promised it was being taken down and that they neglected to see the reporter's note not to publish that name. I pointed out to her (as you can see in my above post) the original story did not include the name, and yet someone had to have gone back and intentionally added that name. At least they're taking it down, but damn!

I just did a search for "pizza delivery shootings" there must be 50 or so last year alone. I think Dillon should sell their GMC packaged minigun to delivery drivers.
Any way thats exactly why the easy money is not worth the problems involved........well unless you like the threat environment and all

When I was delivering pizza I was always packing. I did not care that it was wrong or not. I had a crazy ex girlfriend that tried to run down my grandmother and her dog, she kidnapped and killed another of my dogs and ran over one spinning the tires on its body. The tried to break into my house. She had also threatened my life and my families life.

Then to top things off my mom and stepdad went and bought a car from this girls father. They did this not two months after all this happend.
