I just did a search for Charlton Heston to find an article and guess what popped up?

The Daily Kos.

They already have some very hateful things to say about this great man. I wonder if I'll be seeing anything about this on the "O'Reilly Factor."

At my age, I've had many friends move on.

Though we never met, I considered him a Friend in the best sense of the word.

Requesciat in Pace, my Friend.

The man was sexist, racist, and actually knew very little about guns themselves--hence, he was an ill-advised choice for NRA president.

I've never harboured an ounce of respect for the man.

I am stunned at the vitriol. Actually, he knew quite a little bit about the guns that he owned and worked with.
I happened to know him, and it is obvious you didn't.

He marched in civil rights efforts with Dr. King before it became fashionable, and perhaps while you were still in diapers.

He had a great deal of respect for women, professionally and personally. There are some he certainly did not get along with, but that doesn't make him sexist.

Pretty "low road" IMHO. I daresay it took you until after the man was dead. I hardly believe you'd have said that to his face, when he was in a condition to defend himself.

Sure, he might not have been perfect, especially in the light of today's society.

Even in a social sense, standing on the shoulders of giants type stuff. He wasn't just of the previous generation to me, but the one before it. Even if he did make the occasional comment, well, everybody makes those comments on occasion as well.

Judge him as a whole, not individual incidents.

RIP

He will be missed, and his work for the RKBA will be eternally appreciated. The best way we can honor his memory is to carry on the fight, just as he did.

rocinante:
You forgot "The Big Country" A great western with one heckuva fight scene. Heston told me during an interview that it took three days to film that, in the daylight. Wyler used a special filter on the camera to make it look like they were fighting at night under the moonlight.

bloodedsky: I'd sure like to see this film of him making sexist remarks. I suspect we would all like to make up our own minds.

theres no reason to speak ill of the dead.
He's dead. If you dont choose to celebrate the passing of a man who lived a full life, don't. Let those who wish to, do so

Heston supported both the Civil Rights movement and the Right to Keep and Bear Arms at times when both were unpopular. That speaks to the man's character, and we're all lessened without him.

Initially I was going to delete bloodedsky's crass comments for being utterly classless and low-road. But after reading through the thread, and seeing how many of you were willing to rebut his vitriol while staying on the high road, I've decided to let the posts stand. Those of you who were willing to do so without resorting to flaming do this forum a service, and I'm proud to be associated with you.

A statement from his family read: "To his loving friends, colleagues and fans, we appreciate your heartfelt prayers and support," the Heston family said in a statement.

"Indeed, he committed himself to every role with passion, and pursued every cause with unmatched enthusiasm and integrity," the statement went on to say.

"We knew him as an adoring husband, a kind and devoted father, and a gentle grandfather, with an infectious sense of humour. He served these far greater roles with tremendous faith, courage and dignity.

"He loved deeply, and he was deeply loved.

"No one could ask for a fuller life than his. No man could have given more to his family, to his profession, and to his country. In his own words, 'I have lived such a wonderful life! I've lived enough for two people.'"

A great man has passed. RIP, my friend. I am happy for you and your family that you did not linger very long.

I say this as my Father died from Alzheimer's about 15 years ago. In his case, the onset was at an earlier age and he lingered many years before he passed. It is not a pleasant situation, and death is indeed a blessed relief for everyone concerned.

He supported civil rights when it was unpopular. He supported free speech when it was unpopular (see his speech at Harvard). He supported gun rights (another civil right) knowing it would and did cost him many jobs and a ton of money.

He was a man of principle.

There are few with his courage these days. More's the pity.

I think one of the best Heston lines -- and I cannot remember right now in which film or on what television show he said it, but I think this might apply to our mudslinger:

"Put your pants on, sonny, so I can kick your butt!"

Now THAT's class.

It's sad to see how the man isn't even dead a day, and certain people are already dragging his memory through the streets.

I'd like to think that we would be capable of more restraint when a Pelosi or a Schumer passes, or even a Michael Moore. From what I've seen here and elsewhere, we're just as capable of being less than charitable. But let's try to be somewhat better ...

Pssssssst ...

Man... I am truly saddened by this. I have been reading about this man's life and work just this past week, so to hear about this really struck me hard. He was a great man and a true patriot. He fought for freedom and civil rights at times when it was unpopular or politically incorrect. This world is a lesser place without him.

He had a great deal of respect for women, professionally and personally.

Charlton Heston is one of a very few Hollywood actors who remained faithful to one spouse. That fact alone should gain everyone's respect. Lydia, his wife of 64 years, was at his side last evening as he passed on. God bless them both for their example.

Sad to hear.

Good Actor, Firm 2A Supporter, One of far to few Actors who were Real Men.
He will be greatly missed.

If you are Christian and have children the Bible Stores narrarated by him are great. Great voice as we all know plus he was a true believer.

El Tejon, there is no explanation or evidence. But, there is a solution - the ignore list. Those comments of bloodedsky were not only groundless, but inappropriate for a thread honoring the passing of a great American.
