I currently own a few .22lrs but I am looking for something a little bit more accurate at 100-300 yards. I’m looking for ammo that can be bought at my local Wal-Mart and MC Sports for cheap and a cheap gun, under $200. I know the Mosin Nagant and the 6.62x54 can be found for cheap but the ammo is not readily available at my local stores. I’m relatively new to the gun world and need some advice on what to purchase. Thank you!

I don't know. What do you call accurate? Usually, cheap and accurate are mutually exclusive. Even the best ammunition for .22 rimfire is pretty expensive.

That having been said, whenever someone says that they want a good and cheap rifle, my knee jerk reaction is usually a Stevens.

I'll vote for 7.62x39 and a CZ-527M to put them right where you want them.

Not sure how it'll do you fron 200-300 yds though, if that's important.

Definitaly .223
These 2 might be the only guns in your price range.
Savage Axis (Edge)
Remington 770

Also look at the Stevens 200 (Savage)
Maybe even a weatherby vanguard
or a used slightly better gun.

Getting the rifle for 200-300 might happen, but youll need a scope too, so look for a combo deal.

.223 is the cheapest centerfire ammo. 55gr-62gr FMJ is everywhere for about $0.30+ a round.

If you reload, anything you want can be $0.30 a round

7.62x39 will get you there, but you'll need to spend more than $200 on a rifle to shoot it with. It's going to be tough to hit 200-300 yards with a cheap AK.

What are you wanting to shoot at 2-300 yards?

Paper, varmints, soup cans? .223 in most any rifle will get you there. It just depends on how "accurate" you want to be.

Elk, bear, etc? You're gonna need something bigger. :)

The under $200 gun really limits you. I honestly can't think of anything that meets that criteria. If you're willing to order ammo online or find local shops that carry it, you can find an 8mm Mauser in several flavors that will be right around $200 and ammo is just a little more than 7.62x54R. If it must be cheap Wal-Mart ammo, then you'll need to look for a good used bolt action in .223. You can get close, but you'll be lucky to get under $200 for that.

Another thing, unless you buy an old military surplus rifle in that price range, you can be almost guaranteed that it won't have iron sight, so you'll have to allow for an optics budget too.
