Cheap Steel Case Wolf Ammo for Plinking with DPMS rifles

My DPMS 5.56 is what I bought the Wolf Ammo for and it is 1x9 twist. My LR-308 is 1x10 twist. Well, I hope the 55gr wolf ammo will not rough it up. I have not found any cheap .308 wolf ammo. I am currently waiting on some more surplus ammo for my .308. I forget the name it is I think Czech Brass Surplus ammo. I ordered some Lithuanian at .65/round, which is way to much for plinking. But at least I can do a litlte shooting with it. The Czech stuff I am hearing about will be around .45-.50 a round. It is your typical east european brass cased surplus ammo I guess. Anybody had any experience with that? I don't plan on doing as much shooting with my .308 as with my 5.56.

Wolf is dirty, a bit underpowered, and smelly, but no, it won't "hurt" your AR. Any proper AR, assembled with care and with parts of proper specification, will be fine with Wolf.

I really like Brown Bear. Shoot bunches of it through my AR's and GASP once in a while through my M1A. Never liked Wolf period, dirty and underpowered. I personally have never had a problem with steel cased ammo. Do some searches for Wideners and Ammotogo. You will find Brown Bear (Barnaul, same thing) for some very nice prices. Be aware though that right now is a tough time to buy any ammo in bulk, expensive and hard to get. I would try to pick up a hundred rounds here and there to see what your gun likes and then buy bulk. Buying a large amount of an unproven ammo could be a mistake. JMHO Bill

Oh for gosh sake, another Wolf ammo thread... :D

Wolf ammo is fine, it's wonderful, it goes bang when you pull the trigger!

read up on that box-o-truth article that was posted. They make an important point about not shooting brass ammo after shooting steel cased ammo without cleaning it first.

I've only had one misfire with Wolf and I've sent several thousand rounds downrange.

DPMS says it will void your warranty. Bush-Master has it on their recommended list.

Just shoot it, have fun and don't worry bout it.

Just food for thought. CMP lists Fed and Win .223 ammo for $150/200. Not nearly as cheap as Wolf, but better quality.

D.P.M.S. will not warranty any new rifle if you use wolf ammo. My local Gun dealer is friends with the owned.

How will DPMS know if I use wolf ammo? I mean, I asked others about this and people said there is no real way to tell if your gun has used steel case ammo unless pieces of the casings are left in the gun or if the ammo like blew up your gun. I mean, is there any real way of them knowing I used steel case ammo on my gun? I don't want to void my warranty, but I cannot afford to pay .50/bullet for plinking at the range. Even at .25 a bullet for the wolf, I am going to be real poor by the end of the day.

Also, I avoided the brown bear because I saw it was lacquer coated and I was told lacquer is even worse to use on the gun than polymer. Perhaps they have brown bear without the lacquer, but I did not see it available.

Well, I don't know but I stocked up on ammo and have not tested in my gun. I know it could be a mistake, but I was just going by what others told me and beggars cannot be choosers. If the ammo totally hates my gun and loves everyone else's, I suppose I can sell it and not lose so much money. I got good deal on the wolf and I stocked up big time. All the other types of ammo I got I was told worked well with the DPMS 5.56 chambered guns. I am told 5.56 chambered gun is more forgiving with wolf rounds than .223.

Just shoot 2,000 rounds as fast as you can and you will have saved enough to buy a new rifle and won't need to worry about the warranty. :D

Onmilo:

Another gunsmith studied the same problem with the very popular Mini 30, and his conclusions were that instead of lacquer build-up, it was carbon, due to operator/owner neglect.
He stated that using rigid steel shells allows carbon to squeeze around it, and when later using brass shells, the softer cases expand and get stuck in dirty chambers.

A friend who is on the Navy (Reserve) Rifle Team gave me a bore brush and it goes in the SKS', Mini 30's and MN 44's chambers after each trip to the river (shooting paper is not really fun for me so I seldom go to the range).

So then I take it, if you use steel case, then you got to do a thorough cleaning. If you keep your rifle well maintained and clean, using steel case ammo should be ok? Well, I have no problem doing anything it takes to use cheaper ammo, because ammo prices I hear are only going up and I want to do some serious shooting and I am not wealthy guy. I have managed to avoid getting the lacquer stuff, which I hear does leave residues in the gun. True, I hear wolf is not so accurate, but then through an AR or bolt gun, is that a problem, since these guns are known for being fairly accurate?

That would be correct.

Steel cased ammo is nothing new, it's been used far longer than most of us have been on this earth.

Wolf is the only ammo that has never caused a FTE/Stovepipe in my AR. I've use and continue to use Federal Brown Box and Prvi with hardly an issue and this is also my "good" ammo. Wolf, however, is my favorite range ammo due mainly to price.

I don't mind shooting WOLF ammo.

I have shot a fair ammount of brownbear through my AR, with 100% reliability. It does take more cleaning afterwards, but its not the end of the world.
Great info, thanks.

I don't own an AR, but a good friend of mine does. I can never get him to go shooting with me because typical over-the-counter .223/5.56 is too expensive for him (he's a law student on a limited budget) - the cheap price of Wolf would help to change his mind, once I'm able to reassure him that it won't damage his rifle.
