I always find it easiest to break it down to cost per round.
1) CCI Blazer Brass (5220) FMJ 180gr $10.99 per 50
2) PMC (PM40D) FMJ 165gr. $10.28/50
3) Federal American Eagle (AE40R2) FMJ 180gr $10.45/50
4) Aquila FMJ 180gr $10.95/50
Also:
The best defensive rounds have been discussed, but is there an inexpensive bulk round in 40 S&W that anyone can recommend for defense (the XM193 is the standard for 5.56, but is there an equivalent for 40 S&W)?
Are any of the following worth considering?
1) Remington (R40SW2C) 180gr JHP $11.45/50
2) Federal Hi-Shok (40SWB) 155gr JHP $12.99/50
3) Winchester Ranger 155gr JHP $13.99/50 (This is NOT the new R40T, unfortunately)
4) Winchester Ranger 180gr JHP $13.29/50 (This is

So we're looking at roughly....
1)$0.22/round
2)$0.20/round
3)$0.20/round
4)$0.22/round

And your SD ammo for about...
1)$0.23/round
2)$0.26/round
3)$0.28/round
4)$0.26/round

Sheesh I wish I could get YOUR prices on SD ammo!

I generally shoot Winchester White box or Blazer for practice and Winchester Ranger SXT for SD.

My local Wal-Mart has
WWB in the 100 round "bulk pack" for $0.21/round.
Blazer (when they have it) $0.20/round.
UMC in the bulk 250rd pack is $0.23/round.

My mom n' pop stores are crazy expensive by comparison with an average of $0.41/round for range ammo and $0.53+/round for self defense ammo! I like to support the mom n pop places but I sure can't afford to do it by purchasing ammo!

I have not shot this companies .40...but I really like their RNL .45 for range practice. check out bestshotammo.com it is remanufactured but you wouldnt know it! They have 180gr fmj .40 for $165/1000.
