.40 S&W defense loads for shoprt barreled semi

recently got a Springfield Armory XD SubCompact in .40 S&W with a short 3" barrel; so far I've tested Hornady XTP 155gr & 180gr; Federal HydraShok 180gr; Remington UMC 180gr jhp; I have plans to test Winchester Personal Defense 180gr jhp; I find it odd that 165gr loads seem to have relative velocities that are lower than 180gr loads, so I haven't tried any yet; the gun so far seems to operate well with all that I have tested & now it comes down to velocity vs penetration & expansion concerns...

what's the consensus with a shorter barreled semi...lightweight (155gr), midweight (165gr), or heavyweight (180gr) & why; thanks
