Not sure if this is the best section for this question, but I can't think of a better one:

I'll be taking a 4-day defensive handgun course just outside of Las Vegas in a few weeks. I arrive a day before the course starts. The course requires 800 rounds of FMJ range ammo. I shoot mostly CCI Blazer Aluminum at home, and it has worked fine for me and in my guns. Blazer Aluminum is an approved ammo for the course.

Instead of buying 800 rounds here in Oregon and flying it around (I haven't called my airline yet about transporting it, but whether or not it will be a hassle I would prefer to buy it after I land), where would be a well-priced place around Vegas to buy some range ammo?

After a web search, there is no Sportsman's Warehouse, Cabelas or Academy Sports in Vegas. There is a Bass Pro Shops.

Any Vegas locals have some tips?

Thanks for any info.

800 rds would weigh in excess of what airlines allow. Can't help you with a place to buy but you should consider shipping to the UPS or Fedex facility in Vegas for pickup or delivery to wherever you're staying.

I figure if I can buy Blazer for $7.99/box here in OR, and ~$7.99/box there, then I won't gain much by shipping it from OR to NV.

Yes, I looked into Academy, but the nearest one to Nevada (or here, for that matter) is in Oklahoma.

I'm looking for the cheapest place to buy 9mm ammo in southern Nevada.

Here in Vegas Walmart does sell Ammo (but they normally don't have a large amount in either caliber). Big 5 Sporting goods sells it also, and they have various stores around town. If they don't have enough in one store, they can get it delivered from the other stores pretty quick (but theyt aren't quite as cheap as Walmart).

Bass Pro Shops will probably have a greater quantity, since their ammo selection in the Las Vegas store is pretty good. You didn't mention what caliber you need, but it it's a standard caliber there should be enough ammo in town to fill your order.

Hope this helps,

If you're going to be staying in Pahrump,[recommended], there is a Wal-Mart Super Center that usually has a very good stock. Also try "Master at Arms". on Thousandaire Blvd. in Pahrump. Call and talk to Robbie and he will have it there at a good price for you. Tel:775-751-1511, Open Tues--Sat 10AM till 6PM

wal-mart is a great place, and i normally stock up when i am back home and use moms discount card which helps out even more. also you could think about next time when you are planned on going to a trainning course to have the ammo drop shipped to the school just cordinate in advance with the instructers. that is how i have seen alot of people get thier ammo squared away.

Thanks for the tips, all. I don't shop at WalMart, so I'll probably just go to one or two Big 5's and/or the Bass Pro Shop and load up. I've been happy with the prices at Big 5 here at home.

The facility doesn't accept shipments of ammo.

N.M. Edmands, thanks for the Pahrump info -- I plan to camp on BLM land nearby the facility. I'm really trying to do this trip on a budget, and besides, all other things being equal, I would always rather sleep outdoors than in.

I can dig it. Anchor your shelter well, I think that valley is where the worlds winds go to regenerate. You're going to have a great experience, stay well and safe.:D

tradja,
Let us know how the course goes. My son and I may be going out there in the next few months.

Waynes, will do. Frontsight sure seems to be controversial around here, but I'm approaching this with an open mind.

If you have never been to the edge of Death Valley, It can get very
warm during the day, but at night ya sometimes think, might be in Alaska!
Lot of open country in the late 60s and early 70s, not so true now.
Don't recall much BLM land to camp. Tecopa Hot Springs over on
the Calif. side. From what I hear now, it is pretty grown up with
people clear to Clark county!:) It's not Oregon!!!:(
