I have a Kershaw Leek, and my brother is enraptured with how it opens.

I want to get him an assisted opener, but he’s a Harbor Freight kind of guy and doesn’t appreciate quality, I don’t have any problem paying for a Kershaw for him but he’d rather have 3 Chinese ones than one good one.

So, what’s the cheapest assisted opening or automatic knife?

You can get the Kershaw Leek for under $40.

There are some knockoffs out there but it really means going to a bunch of knife shows and coming across them.

You can get non-AO knives for like $15 that are of great quality - because a slipjoint or whatever the opinel's lock is called aren't exceedingly complicated mechanisms.

Kershaw's speedsafe and Gerber FAST are the most inexpensive AO brands that I'd trust.

RE: auto knives.
I dunno about harbor freight, try riker's island.

No one's going to give you information on "cheap" autos here.

Cheap AOs can be found at pawn shops.

+1 for kershaw speed safe. i use a tanto Blur i found at wal mart for 56.00

its not the cheapest, but its the most inexpensive AO i would trust. it has a very strong blade lock when it snaps out. a quality knife with an insanely sharp edge

Just ordered a black Scallion on eBay for $28 shipped. Quality does not have to cost a lot.

Geeze, if 50 bucks is to much, I don't have a suggestion. If you spend less than that fully expect it to become non functional at the worst oppertune moment!
