Could be some sort of weapon, but not sure how.

But I tried something I saw on TV and then read about on the internet.

Basically, you dump 13 Mentos as rapidly as possible into a freshly opening two-liter of soda, and jump back.

On TV, when they got all 13 Mentos instantly into the bottle with a test tube, the jet of cola easily went 10 feet high.

Tonight, my PVC pipe allowed some of the Mentos to bunch up before getting into the soda, so we got only about four feet of height out of the resultant spew.

But hey, with Mentos and some 50-cent two-liters of Sam's Cola from Wal-Mart, it was cheap fun.

I'll be seeking out a more perfect Mentos releasing unit...probably a test tube that makes the Mentos stack atop each other, not lay in a pile.

If you could somehow get something down into the two-liter that would float and then stop the neck of the bottle completely airtight, I think you might be able to make a soda bomb out of this thing.

Soda is open, with floating stopper in it.

Mentos are dumped in.

Explosive reaction happens, forcing the floating stopper up into the neck.

Pressure spikes, and BOOOOOOOM......foamy soda bomb of doom.

Some people just aren't right in the head.:D

This might have merit as a distraction device though. The question is, how are you going to get the floating stopper through the bottleneck in the first place?

hillbilly - You do realize that if this thing works really well (think cola-flavored cold fusion) and you kill yourself, the entire Internet will be laughing at you?

In any event, some video would be good. :D

I think it could be done if the soda were carefully poured into another container with, say, a ping-pong ball in it as the stopper.

Hmmmmm......

I will work on some video of this, as we have a new digital camera with short video capability.

But it is quite striking when the soda shoots up out of the bottle with such violence.

As for killing myself, I do have some experience blowing up two-liter bottles.

I have made quite a few MRE heater bombs in the past.

Take one MRE heater. Tear it open and pout into the bottle. Then add just enough water, quickly screw on the lid, and run away from the bottle.

If you get it just right, the two-liter expands and expands and then goes BOOOM!

Quite entertaining.

We always use 20oz pop bottles, balled up Al foil and drano. The explosion can be quite fierce.

I don't know how much damage they'd actually do to a person, and timing the detonation can be tricky, but they do a heck of a job on paper wasp nests if you toss them close.

this reminded me of something else...have any of you noticed if you eat chocolate and then take a drink of coke the coke foams up in your mouth instantly? i wonder why it does that.

MRE bombs tossed over the berm into the ammo dump at Camp Wilson will bring out the entire reaction force.

You'll want to get below hard cover before they start in with the thermal trackers though.

Especially the 2nd or third time you wake them all up.

If you ever are able to get some dry ice, fill up a 20oz bottle about half way or more and then fill it with water, put the lid on tight and quickly throw it away. It's pretty explosive and fun. Just kind of hard to get the dry ice.:D

Rig a cap for the bottle I would think a jar would work best with a rubber one way seal set it on a pull pin release with the mentos ontop of it and use a string to pull it.

Or

A contraption similar to a glow stick encase the mentos in something breakable in a container of soda and throw it hard enough to break with the cap on could work ;)

I will have to play with this one though :p

Want more of the foam? Use sugar, get a tablespoon or two into it as fast as possible. That'll make some foam.

Dang, another thread I'll have to hide from my children... :banghead:

... at least until we get enough soda bottles saved up to make a good afternoon. :D

You don't need a stopper. Get something to hold the mentos up near the neck. Dump some soda out so that no soda comes in contact with them. Put the mentos in but keep them separate. Put the cap on tight and handle it carefully. When you are ready to set it off, shake it, throw it, and run like hell.
Or maybe a tripwire that will pull the bottle over. Bottle falls over, pop mixes with mentos, BOOM.
I haven't ever tried this, but looking at it from what you guys have said I think this will work.

I think they put the heaters in MRE's just to amuse us. MRE bombs do make for hysterical comedy in some situations.

Two things I learned about MRE bombs:
Never set one off in the basement of your barracks and never "initiate" one and toss it near the guard shack.
Both of these actions will draw unwanted attention, possibly from the First Sergeant. Not good.

Sounds like a self-inflicted wound to the head ;)

Remember when soda bottles were made of GLASS? 1/2 a bottle of soda and some dry ice in a glass bottle made for good times growing up.

ThreatCon Charlie is a very bad time to throw a MRE bomb near a guard post...:what:

Some pranks just are not cool at all.:banghead:

Not that the individual in question was still in the USAF, much less an SP, after that one...;)

Choose your targets carefully.:)

That was by far the most irritating song I have ever heard. As far as the dry ice goes, you can buy it at wal-mart. Shooters fill a pop bottle 1/3 with water and add dry ice, place it in front of the vitals and there is no question about if you hit it. Kids also use the same tecnique except they throw em in the lake. When a boat hits em, KA-BOOM. No damage, just a healthy shock-wave.
Grenades can be created but using 1/2 water instead of 1/3. When you hear the plastic start stretching/blistering, you have about 3 seconds to get rid of it.

what ever happened to the calcium carbide and water it a bottle trick better explosion and if you do it just right you get a fireball too.

(note) i did this as a kid at a farm pond under adult supervision and later on at a private range. it was loads of fun but like any thing of this nature be extremely careful.

Some good ideas.

I will have to try some of these out soon, and try to take digital video of the results.

I can not be held responsible for this...

You can take a 20oz bottle and place liquid drano in it then ball up a small amount of aluminum foil and shake the bottle. This causes some sort of chemical reaction that is volatile.

The force is somewhat powerful so you might want to run a bit. The explosion itself is not all that bad but it can hurt someone. If this is attempted caution should be used
