Chicago mayor in group pushing for gun laws in wake of NIU shootings
Feb 20, 2008 @ 08:07 AM
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO -

Mayor Richard Daley and other elected officials pointed to the fatal shootings at Northern Illinois University and a Lane Bryant store as reasons to act as they announced their annual push for new gun-control legislation.

The officials Tuesday again said they will push a package of proposals that includes several bills that have repeatedly been introduced in Springfield, before meeting heavy opposition from gun-rights advocates.

“Gun violence is responsible for the deaths of nearly 30,000 Americans every year, many of them young people,” Daley said.

Oak Park Village President David Pope recited a list of shootings on school campuses nationwide in recent months, including the latest at NIU.

“If we can’t adopt some sensible legislation in the aftermath of what we just recently experienced in DeKalb, I have no idea when this is going to happen,” Pope said.

The National Rifle Association, which considers the annual legislative package an attempt to infringe on gun owners’ rights, declined to comment on specifics of the legislation or Daley’s remarks.

“We think it is poor form for a politician or a special-interest group to try to push a legislative agenda on the back of any tragedy,” NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said. “Now is the time for the Northern Illinois University community to grieve and to heal. We believe there is adequate time down the road to debate policy and politics.”

Among the measures in the package of bills being pushed by Daley and others would require buyer background checks in private sales of handguns; impose more stringent requirements to safeguard firearms in places where there are children, and ban gun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

“If we can’t adopt some sensible legislation in the aftermath of what we just recently experienced in DeKalb, I have no idea when this is going to happen,” Pope said.

Gee, when I saw this part I thought they were talking about finally passing concealed carry, castle doctrine, and other sensible laws. I should haveve known better, I lived there long enough.

Daley brings back this crap every year and it has not been going much of anywhere lately. Lawmakers here in Illinois have allready been getting calls and letters by the hundreds about these proposals. These do make a difference as will March 11, 2008 when gun owners all over the state meet in Springfield to lobby for less restrictions and for CCW. Anyone wanting to make a real difference in this state should be there.
Things will get better in Illinois but not without hard work, gun owners must stand up and be counted now. Last years IGOLD was the biggest ever and momentum is going to make this year even bigger.
We have quite a few Illinois residents here on THR, how about it will you make a commitment or not? Jim.

Ahhh, Oak Park. I had family that lived there, once. This is the same town that was willing to court to prevent "For Sale" and "For Rent" signs on houses and apartments, desiring that all sale and rental transactions be handled and coordinated through the Oak Park Housing Center. :scrutiny: You also need to get a parking permit for vehicles that you park on your own private property, you know, because....uh...I...uh...hmmm...err...they really want the money. :scrutiny:

They're pretty avowed Big-Government socialists in Oak Park. Lovely place to visit, though.

JBusch, the number is accurate. Of course, the number is suicides, accidents, and murders. Take suicides out and you get around 10-11 thousand deaths from murders and accidents combined. The 30,000 figure is a common tactic used to make 'the problem' seem like it is worse than it is.

Do you have anything to back up your claim. It would be nice if you did before you posted it.

Before you are critical of my post......you know who you are

Dieing from a injury inflicted by a gun is violent, it may not be intentional, in self defense, or self inflicted but it is violent. Now, why don't you take all this pent up rage and need to be right and use it for something that actually helps something? I'm out of this thread, if you guys are more interested in infighting over semantics rather than actually trying to work the problem you deserve whatever happens.

Because every time someone posts a number we should make sure it is correct for our own benefit. As well as I am always skeptical of stats that I read on forums without benefit of a link.

I would also be wary of anything found on www.guncite.com as it is a very biased source. I would suggest using the current UCR for stats that have less bias and more credibility.

This is the way Socialist rule. They get their subjects all worked up over something emotional in order to quietly continue to rape the people of their money and rights magicians call this trick, Sleight of Hand, in political circles it is called a Trojan Horse Maneuver. The Germans used this tactic to go to war with Poland. Daly Sr. taught Jr. all the tricks of the trade.
