Chicago Wants to Tax Ammo

I don't think it ever passed, but the California Legislature has been bringing this up every session.

Bill was usually introduced by Don Perata (California). [Not sure if Pe-RAT-a is even still in office] They have tried a nickle-a-bullet, dime-a-bullet, etc. suposedly to "pay for emergency care of 'gun violence' victims."

So, a dime-a-bullet is $5.00 for a 50-round box of .22LR, $50 for a 'brick' of .22's.

{Now accepting franchise applications for "State-Line Shooting Supply" Stores. Each franchise 500 Yds out of Illinois, soon to be open on all major highways and by-ways!}:D  :D  :D

Or should that be "County-Line Shooting Supply?" Each store 500 Yds outside C[r]ook County, Ill

*snicker* They may raise a dollar or two. Chicago drove its gun culture underground years and years ago.

They used to sell ammo at the Sport Mart on LaSalle. I never bought any since I never had a FOID. IIRC Sport Mart (remember Sport Marty?) stopped selling ammunition in the mid-90s at least in Chicago.

They would raise more money if they taxed the ammunition of the aldermen. Did you hear how many guns the cops found when they arrested the last alderman a couple of months ago?

$50: Terry "Tank" Johnson, if the Bears defensive tackle made the trip across the county line for the 500 rounds of ammunition allegedly found in his Lake County home.

In Chicago, is it illegal to have 500 rounds of ammunition? Is that illegal ANYWHERE in the U.S.?

Cook County

Actually, I believe it's up for discussion on the county level. Cook county includes Chicago and some surrounding suburbs. Actually, it's the biggest county in the country. Kind of a foolish way to raise money as ammunition can easily be had in the surrounding counties. Kind of like the cig. taxes. Just by your cigs/ammo in Dupage, Lake or Kane counties. I doubt it raises nearly as much money as they claim when proposing the tax initially.

Lets see--

1) No One will ship ammo to Cook anymore anyway.
2) After latest AWB the few gun shops there will go away soon (Oh and if you didn't notice folks---turn those mags and weapons:) in by next week).
3) Maybe start with the Cook County Sheriffs Police--tax THEIR Ammo first.

Is there a lot of ammo sold in a town that has banned guns?

It's actually county legislation, not city legislation. There are presently a good number of gunshops in Cook county that are dealing with the recent ban on, among other things, standard capacity magazines. I suspect something like this would put them out of business entirely.

If you haven't got a city permit for a firearm chambered for that ammunition - yes. If you do have such a permit - no.

ETA: [sorry for the overlap with the above two posters]

Kind of pointless.

I'm not aware of a single gun shop still in Cook County. Might be one or two on the edge of the county, but I don't know of any.

Even the gun shops outside of Cook County won't sell handguns, Semi-Auto rifles or shotguns or ammo to anyone with a Cook County/Chicago address.

I was in one (Rinks in Lockport) when a guy came in and wanted to buy an AR. He got all PO'd when they told him they couldn't sell to him and yelled that they were being racist (the guy was African-American) They tried to explain to him that it wasn't their choice and if he didn't like it he should change the Cook County and Chicago governments.

It always surprises people when they decide they want/need a gun for HD and they start to find out how many hoops they really have to jump through. But everyone that goes through it is a convert for our side of the discussion.

The Aldercreatures

One funny thing: Chicago's aldercreatures are allowed CCW. So they'd be taxing their ammo. Although I doubt most of them are smart enough to figure out which end the bullet comes out.

Really? The Cook County "Deadly Weapons Dealer license" says they can't display or advertise guns or ammo, so I don't know if there's any gunshops in Cook.

Budget shortfall of projected $250,000 in new tax, budget shortfall of sales tax from gunshops, budget shortfall of Deadly Weapons Dealer licenses ($500/yr I think)...I'm surprised that one of the "progressive" aldermen didn't think of this first.

Projected $250,000: Cops and aldermen buy 2.5 million rounds/year? I'm sure they're exempt... :neener:
Sportsmen/hunters buy 2.5 million shells at the Park District range? :barf:
Cook can't ban internet sales (sellers may refuse to ship but that's a different story) or ammo purchased out-of-county, nor can they tax it. I'm sure they'll eventually try.

is that legal? dont you pay a tax on the ammo in the first place when you pay sales tax?

This is where I really wish that a ruling by the PA state supreme court was recognized nationally, and applied to arms.

In summary, with respect to sales taxes on bibles, the PA SC held that the taxation of an instrumentality of a fundamental right had a chilling effect on the excercise of that right, and therefore was verbotten.

Sadly, I do recall paying normal sales tax on ammo...

I'm not familar with the legislation you reference, CD -can you point me in the direction?

In any event, I shot at Midwest Guns in Lyons last weekend, and Gunworld in Bensenville the weekend before. There's also Shore Galleries up in Lincolnwood. Not positive about the political boundaries, but I'm pretty sure all of those shops are in Cook.

Not in Chicago. You're a felon if you own one there, so you can't vote.

I live in Chicago, I legally own a firearm, and I vote regularly. :)

If Chicago passed a tax on stupidity, they'd have more
riches than they'd know what to do with..I don't blame
the citizens, but those running the place need
a serious heads-up.

Yes it's legal. The government taxes many items more than once. Tariffs, excise taxes, and sales taxes are examples. A bottle of imported liquor most likely has all three. Additionally, many jurisdictions charge a state and city sales tax.

Don't you wish you had a boat full of tea to run amok with?

*Chris Rock mode on*

They should make bullets $5,000 each. Think about it, some guy gets shot and you know he did something. They put $50,000 worth of bullets in his ass!

I'm gonna pop you.........as soon as I can afford it. You better hope I can't get no bullets on layaway!

Tax

Kevin Said:

>Liberals realize they can't repeal the Second Amendment, BUT they can tax ammo to hell and back.<

Bingo. And the power to tax is the power to destroy. When it comes...our ammunition is where they'll hit us.

what DONT they want to tax?-sales tax is already 10% in that rat infested city! I moved out 1 year ago and have never felt homesick 1 single day.
