I have serious problem with Chimpmunks in my yard. I have the solution (22lr)but, I live around many houses and cant shoot them. Anyone have a remedy for these pesky critters? I mean they even get up in my car and chew on the wiring. I have found what looks to be dog food in the area where my wiring has been chewed. Any suggestions?

My first post and I post about Chimpmunks.

The insulation of many cars' wiring harnesses is of vegetable-based plastic. Mousies just luvvit! (FoMoCo at one time got their harnesses from Brazil; the plastic was made from soybeans. Yum! Ungood for farmer to park pickup truck in barn!)

I've had success with various baits in mouse and rat traps. Raisins, peanut butter...Even small meat scraps.

Another very good passive trap is one of these plastic five-gallon buckets such as used for hydraulic oil or paint. Put some bait in the bottom. Seeds, rasins...Set the bucket near some mouse-climbable surface/wall. They'll jump in. One-way trip.

A .22 Short fired from a rifle with a 1 liter plastic pop bottle taped to the muzzle makes almost no sound whatsover.

Of course, that would be ILLEGAL and no good American would assemble such a device without having the proper tax stamps! And besides, the bottle will interfere with the sights and you'd have to use a scope with a medium or high mount. Worse, you'd have to have defined "kill zones" where the dirt is soft and no ricochet is possible.

However, since that would be a violation of an obscure provision of the tax code, it's illegal, and possibly even immoral...

Rat traps are very effective. Bait them with any kind of fruit or nut. However, try to put them somewhere where the birds can't get to them. Additionally, tie them down to something.

How do you catch the chipmunks so that you can tie them down to something? :D

Couldn't you use a pellet rifle, or BB gun?

Try to find some .22 CB shorts or longs. Velocity is so low that you can see them in flight and the noise level is about the same as a loud hand clap. About the equivalent of a good high velocity pellet rifle. I have shot them into pop cans full of water and not had them go through the other side of the can. They just punch a hole and rattle in the can.

Golgo-13, that was uncalled for ! Pellet guns may not be real guns, but that doesn't justify calling stubby a weasel! Shame on you! :fire:

What?

Oh. Sorry.

:D

I have my daughter's Chipmunk rifle from which is fired Aguila .22 Sans poudre (no powder) ammo. The click of the bolt is louder than the muzzle report. The round isn't bad for about 20 yards. After that, drop becomes awfully significant. At 50 yards, it will penetrate 5 layers of cardboard IDPA targets with no problem, but have a drop of close to 20" or so from point of aim.

Of course, it still counts as real ammo and that may not be legal to dishcarge where you are. If not, a good pellet gun and a $8 scope will be more than sufficient.

Actually, I'm fascinated to hear of a "chimpmunk" problem... what sort of strange and contortionist mating (not to mention cross-species DNA compatibility) produced these strange beasts?

 :neener: :p

Beats havin a hippagator problem.

I have caught quite a few mice with a trash can. Bait on stick that tips into the can when critter gets out to that end.

Aguila "Colibri"...

really thump the munk. Red box for rifle, yellow box for pistol.:D

I kill them in the back yard every year. The little rodents are prolific! In Cali they call them mini-bears.

A live trap will work also.

My dad got into chipmunk extermination after he got a lot of grief from my mom. They ate all of the little seedlings she spent the winter growing under the lights. It was really funny watching her trying to load my brother's BB gun - she's not exactly mechanically inclined.

Anyway...rat traps and peanut butter. Small animals love peanut butter.

I've also seen him put a sock over the end of the downspout/drain pipe, turn on the hose, wash them off the roof, and then thump them on some concrete.

Dad's got over 100 tails mounted on a board in the garage. :D

Well, I reckon them chimpmunks is some weird DNA mixes, alright, and hippogators are a problem for sure. At least we ain't tryin' to deal with wolvarillas. Them's evil.

I remember one time...Nah, too much thread drift.

:D, Art

Yes but wolverillas are protected, endangered I believe, due to loss of habitat. And they are mean. There is no way to live trap one of them and not get hurt.

With that said, one of the primary staples of the wolverillas is chimpmunks.

Autigero4 - suggest you ask CatsDieNow's father to drop in for a week. With a hundred tails in the garage, I'm sure he can handle your handful. If CatsDieNow's father can't help, then resort to trapping & pellet guns.

BTW, when I first saw this thread, I thought it was something to do with the Chipmunk rifle. :D

Finally, hippagators are easy compared to the neighbor's teenager. Even the parent can't control that (and why should they? The teenager is much smarter than the rest of us anyway).

munk huntin'

Well,
How much do you hate 'em? They sell "humane traps". Rodents DO love peanut butter. If you hate 'em, the colibri's are very quiet and effective. Especially in a bolt action. There are also really powerful blow guns for cheap at most flea markets or martial arts magazines. They penetrate REAL well into solid wood doors and are UBER QUIET! Now that might be a bit much for you, but target practice with those is fun. But again this is a problem for you and not about fun. Sorry, re-living my childhood :) Seriously, a bb gun or colibri's lose velocity fast and are the most neighborhood safe if you are gonna go that route. BB gun with pellets are my favorite. Or like my home, we took in a wild cat when she was young. All manner of animals end up eviserated in my garage. There are many more options but I will leave it with those few for you. Happy hunting.
