He said strict controls had helped China avoid a US-style "gun culture", and the rampage had proved that it's necessary to maintain this policy.

US media reported that more than 30,000 people die from gunshot wounds in the country annually
Anyone got real figures on this one?

The ministry launched a national campaign against illegal guns last year. Official figures show that from last June to September, police confiscated about 178,000 illegal guns, 3,900 tons of explosives, 7.77 million detonators and 4.75 million bullets.

Ministry figures also show that more than 3.8 million illegal weapons have been confiscated in recent years.

Now that sounds like a lot of ammo, but for 178,000 guns that's only 26.7 per gun  Low numbers when ya do the math. Interesting read none the less.

He said strict controls had helped China avoid a US-style "free society", and the rampage had proved useful in spreading fear and maintaining a totalitarian state.

Fixed his comment.

3,900 TONS of explosives and almost twice as many DETONATORS as bullets?!?! It doesn't sound to me like guns are the problem in China, lol.

With all the construction going on in china right now, it is probably trivial to get ahold of bomb making material.

I also know that the chinese are very big fans of poinsoning. There is this pesticide in china that is very common throughout the country that is routinely used in homicides. I can't remember the formula, but it was probably related to carbofuran judging from the toxicity.

somebody in China is having way too much fun with flash powder......

when they say "detonators" I have to wonder if they're talking about fuse-cord. It is afterall, manufactured there for the most part - no?

Interestingly enough, the Chinese also got busted smuggling guns and other ordnance into the US as well- must be an oversight.

Yeah, funny thing about places with strict gun control policies,,,,,,
It appears explosives and incendiaries become the weapons of choice of mass murderers.
(Are you reading this Britain, Indonesia, India, and Spain?????)

With the kind of black market they have there, I'd really be suprised if anything is ever done about their "problem".

So how many of their own people has this wonderful Chinese government killed since they came to power after WWII?

Not just murdered by the government but when other governments invaded.

Rape of Nanking.

4.75 million bullets

Wonder if they had any loaded cartridges?
:p

WHO ARE THE DANGED chinese to talk about America's gun culture. They are very quick to criticize American gun owners! So was Kruschev. How about this you internet controlling, religion persecuting, idea monitoring, student killing, writer arresting, military building, lying, spying, preparing, satellite shooting, communists.

HOW TO DESTROY AMERICA . ORG

thats it, its going back in my sig line. . . for awhile anyway

Tiananmen Square, 1989. As stated above, we really need to not listen to China when it comes to basic rights.

Incidentally, it's also illegal to talk about that in China.

Actually I was in China 6 months back. Its a very wierd and strange place. People look as if they are always fighitng and arguing. The cops march around the streets of Beijing in small 8-10 man groups and carry no guns. Just clubs and whistles.
However i did see a Chinese detective carrying what looked like an old revolver. It was attached to his neck by a Lanyard..***?
I remember thinking about how suspicious everyone looked and how much they argued.

"we really need to not listen to China when it comes to basic rights."
There is a political party in the US that gets all woody over communist china's control of it's people. Joe
