China rounds up private firearms

BEIJING -- China reportedly has launched a new crackdown on illegal guns across the country.
The China Daily newspaper reports police nationwide have told the public to turn in their guns including airguns and replica firearms. It said those who fail to comply could get up to two years in prison.
In Beijing, police seized 100 guns last month and detained 98 people. Even though most of the guns were replicas, a police official said such guns can cause "unnecessary nervousness" for the public.
Police in a province in southern China seized nearly 6,700 guns in April and May, nearly all of them replicas.
The crackdown is aimed at enforcing a 1998 law tightening Chinese gun control.

I think guns in the hands of private citizens just causes a bit too much "unnecessary nervousness" for the Chinese government.
