Hey all, I just started shooting some skeet and was wondering if all brand chokes are inter-changable between different gun makers or brand names. I have a mossberg and was gonna try some other chokes , so what size is best for skeet? I do not plan on getting a better skeet gun as my other shooting hobbies are costly e-nuff. I do cowboy action and some long range scoped shoots. So this skeet shooting will be a few sundays a month and hopefully not turn into another hi end hobby. Current skeet gun is a mossberg maverick 88. today was 1st time to try it. 6/25 9/25 and 10/25. That was with the 'full' choke that came with the gun new. Thanks, Bob

No they are not interchangeable as a rule. There are some size chokes used by several gun makers but there are a lot of different thread, length and diameter chokes.

I'm going to guess your Mossberg is a 500. It uses the choke originally used by Winchester (Winchoke), Browning (Invector) and Weatherby, among others. Browning has since gone to a different choke, Invector Plus.

The best choke for skeet would be a skeet choke, although the more commonly available IC would also work. It's only slightly tighter than skeet.

Skeet choke is .005 constriction, IC is .010. Since no target is over 21 yards (I AM assuming we are talking about shooting skeet at the skeet club and NOT backyard clays), .005 is plenty for all target stations.

Choke tubes are not necessarily interchangeable as mentioned.

Does your gun have changeable choke tubes, or did the barrel come with a fixed full choke?

Thanks all, The sg has removable chokes. I usually like #7 or #8 in 1 1/8 oz shot. Not sure what the choke is that came with it as I have the grandkids this evening. 3 and 6 and there keepen me hoppin. Thanks, Bob
