I'm using a 12 gauge Browning invector X-full trap special choke tube, and it says use lead only. My question is regarding the turkey loads I shoot- Winchester Supreme high vel. 3 " 1300 FPS 1 3/4 oz 5 shot and Federal Premium 3" 2 oz shot #5's. I was told that these are copper plated lead. My question is, Can copper plated lead be shot through a "lead only choke"?
My regular turkey gun is out of commission, so I'm forced to use another gun and this is my only choke.

My understanding is copper and even nickel-PLATED is fine. That they're still LEAD pellets for all intent and purpose. That it will deform if and when it needs to on its journey thru your choke tube. That the plating is there to help keep it from deforming so I've always been just a little skeptical, however, again, my understanding is that that's some protection in shipping, storage, and a little as it bounces thru the barrel TO the choke.

I look forward to reading others' understanding.

Even hard alloy lead shot (higher antimony content than dead soft lead) that is plated with copper or nickel is far softer than steel...

Copper and nickel plated lead are safe in all chokes, including fixed chokes. The plating seemed to add more lubricity than hardness in my opinion, but it is not opinion that they pattern better than any other lead shot.
