I have been looking around the internet at various choke tubes. I have a mossberg 500 that the guy that sold it to me also had 2 extra chokes.
My question is, will these chokes only fit into a mossberg?
If I were to buy any new choke tubes, do I have to find one specifically for a mossberg?
It seems that choke tubes can be swapped between some different makes of shotguns. For example, from cheaperthandirt:
Trulock Super-Waterfowl Extended Shotgun Choke, 12 Gauge, .040 Constriction, Full 2, Black, Fits Winchester, Browning Invector, Mossberg

I'm not up on the Mossberg's as some folks are.
It depends I'm sure, as it does with most chokes as to whether certain chokes say for older guns and suggested loads vs newer guns and suggested loads. For instance some chokes are NOT ever to be used with steel shot. Some for steel will throw a different load with lead...then there is Bismuth...and other non-toxic loadings.

One has to consider the thread sizes and length of tubes...etc.

Bunch of Folks do aftermarket chokes. Nu-Line, Carlson, Colonial, Briley...besides the factory avail. Oh the aftermarket folks often have increments of .5...factory may just offer the generic IC, Mod, and Full.

Say we have two bbls one is .730 the other is .725. If we constrict each .10 POC we still have a difference of ".10" The pattern board will tell us what exactly we are throwing. IN theory one might be called Skeet I and the other IC ( markings) but ain't according to pattern board...steel will be tighter...

What a choke is marked does not mean that is what the load will pattern as. True of fixed choked bbls as well. One has to shoot a pattern board with any given load , for any given task , for any given range.

It really is not that simple a question to answer, then again it is not that difficult to understand the concept and test.

Brister's book explains chokes, loads, patterns, stationary patterns and most folks forget or don't realize moving targets and shot strings.

Brister's book is a must IMO, Here are two more good places for more info.

The Winchester, Browning Invector and Mossberg all use the same system.

Carlson's brochure has more interchangeable tubes listed. They make great tubes for reasonable prices.

But, if you have tubes listed as IC, Modified and Full (The usual setup), you cover the bases nicely.

A trap fanatic might want to add an Improved Modified. A Skeet fan might crave a Skeet choke. A turkey fan might want a Super Full, but for GP stuff you're ready.

Instead of tubes, Buy Ammo. Use up. Repeat.

1000 rounds from now, you'll know what chokes will work and for what in THAT shotgun. Adjust if needed and have more fun.

Thanks for the response.
Dave. That is the setup I have. One reason I ask is to see if the chokes from my mossberg would work in my brother's winchester.

They oughta, unless your sibling has one of the old Winchoke setups used on the 50 and 59 autos. IIRC, not interchangeable with anything on this planet. Good system, just didn't catch on. Ahead of its time.

There can be but one....

I respectfully suggest that you check out the Wadwizard in 12 and 20 gauge choke tubes, and also their Power 20 gauge #4 buckshot tactical shells.
