Plan to do some hunting this year, hog & deer.

Going to use my Winchester 1300 hunter model with screw in MODIFIED choke tube.

Plan to shoot Remington "Slugger RIFLED Slugs" which states on the box... "Slugger rifled slugs are designed for optimum performance in smooth bore barrels. Rifled slugs may be fired through any choke; however, improved cylinder provides best results."

So two questions;
1. What's the difference between a MODIFIED and IMPROVED choke?

2. Must I buy a screw in IMPROVED choke tube?

Modified is a bit tighter than IC.

I suspect you'll have good results at reasonable ranges with the Modified. Try it and see, every shotgun is different. I wouldn't go buy a choke unless I was getting down right awful patterns; even then I would look at other slugs first.

The sluggers will shoot thru your modified choke just fine. They are soft lead and are made to squeeze down so they pass thru safely ,even thru full choke guns. The reason that the improved cilinder choke is recomended is because it is less restrictive than modified and the slug will retain it's original dimensions and therefore may be a bit more accurate.

Is there a good web site that describes the different chokes?

I don't think any of it is standardized and the amount of reduction and names vary from one manufacturer to another.

Right?

I have seen a few tables of interchangeable chokes (what chokes fit what guns), but even that is somewhat confusing.

I use the Modified tube in my Benelli. It gives better accuracy for me than the IC tube. I shoot out to 150 yards. The Benelli will easily hold <4" groups at 100 yards from a sitting hand held position.

As usual you High Roaders cut through the mustard and get straight to the point! I checked a few websites and came up confused with the assorted info they provided. In some instance what's said on one site, is contradicted on another.

But the bottom line is I should be fine putting those slugs through a Modified choke tube.

Now for some hogs. I have a lease for over 5,000 acres of prime land on the plateau here in Tennessee and the place is reported to be loaded with wild hogs. I love pork, I love hunting, next step get out and get hunting!

Thanks brothers!!!

My 870 has a fixed modified choke barrel and Brennekes work just fine. The tighter choke is also better for buckshot.

i reload and cast lyman 525 slugs had best results out of my benelli nova was with ic but my franchi likes a modified you will just have to play with it i would also reconsider your choice of ammo

You will find that you just have to try a number of slug loads to find one that "likes" your barrel/choke combo. If you do buy a rifled choke tube, use only sabot rounds specfically intended for rifled barrels/choke tubes. Using sabot rounds in a smooth bore is wasting money and using "rifled" slugs in a rifled tube is a waste of the rifled tube. And you can shoot slugs through any choke, my best smoothbore slug gun is an old VN era Ithaca 37 with an extra full choke.

There's nothing wrong with using rifled slugs in a rifled bore, you should see improved accuracy.

i use sabot slugs in my smoothbore with excellent accuracy the rifled slugs werent worth their lead i melted them and cast sabot slugs check out my post on shooters forum about the lyman 525 in the shotgun section

What do you mean by "sabot slugs"?
What sabot do you use to encase the lead?
