Well, I just got back from the range trying out some new .38 handloads that I put together a couple of days ago and decided to take both my S&W M66 2-1/2 in. bbl and my S&W 642 with a 1-7/8 in. bbl. My handloads consisted of :
Winchester .38 SPCL cases
Winchester small pistol primers
3.4 gr. Titegroup
158 gr. lead round nose bullets
I also tried out some carry ammo for both the .357 and the .38 to see how they preform in their perspective guns. The .357 consisted of Remington 125gr. Golden Saber JHP's and Corbon 140gr. JHP's. The .38 SPCL consited of Remington 158gr.+P LSWCHP's and Speer 135gr.+P JHP's.
Here are the numbers for the M66
Handload:
Hi=736 fps. Lo=705 fps. Avg= 719 fps. Es=31 fps. Sd=10 fps.
Golden Saber 125gr. .357:
Hi=1214 fps. Lo=1146 fps. Avg=1184 fps. Es=68 fps. Sd=23 fps.
Corbon 140gr. .357:
Hi=1275 fps. Lo=1088 fps. Avg=1196 fps. Es=187 fps. Sd=50 fps.
Here are the numbers for the 642
Handload:
Hi=719 fps. Lo=662 fps. Avg=690 fps. Es=57 fps. Sd=15 fps.
Remington 158gr.+P LSWCHP:
Hi=882 fps. Lo=815 fps. Avg=858 fps. Es=67 fps. Sd=21 fps.
Speer 135gr.+P JHP's
Hi=948 fps. Lo=907 fps. Avg=932 fps. Es=41 fps. Sd=12 fps.
These numbers were taken using a tripod mounted ProChrono chronograph from 10 feet away from the muzzle of the pistols. The recoil with the 642 using the +p's seemed equal or even greater than that of the M66 using the .357's. The Golden Sabers had the the least felt recoil that any of the four defensive rounds fired today. It seem that the heavier weight and the full grips of the M66 helped make the recoil more enjoyable than that of the lighter shorter gripped 642.
