any suggestions appreciated! I am planning on purchasing a new ar15 from Rock River and have a pretty big choice to make. I can purchase a tactical entry (full rock river constuction) for $875 with a chrome lined barrel or a DEA model for $1400 (RRA or DPMS forged lower, forged flat top upper with Wilson match grade barrel by Lewis Machine & Tool. Final assembly by Combat Technologies of Arkansa). this would be a compound/building defense weapon and is needed in a large mansion type building that has large and small rooms and the possibility of many hostile indiginous persons. should i risk the possibility of getting a lesser grade firearm (it may very well end up being a superior firearm). I would be using soft tip rounds etc so as to avoid too much collateral damage to the building. or heck who thinks a benelli m3 super90 would be best of all? thanks for any comments or suggestions on better brands or firearm choices

that colt is sweet (nice and light too) but i'm paying for school fight now too and 900 is much more apealing than 1500

$1100-$1500 for an AR! Disgraceful.

Get a stag/RRA complete lower from Eagle firearms for $200.

Order a Clark Gator upper or other custom and you've got a .5 MOA reliable gun for UNDER $1000. You can have any configuration for under $1000 and the base RRA guns are just fine.

Aim Surplus sells a Bushy 16" A3 for $799

RB Precision sells the RRA Entry Tactical for $850 (shipped), plus $40 for chrome lined barrel.

Either one should serve you well.

If I were looking for a 4140 barreled weapon I woud get a Stag.
If I were looking for a 4150 barreled weapon I would get a LMT or Bushmaster.

I believe CMMG also has the 4150 MP tested chrome lined barrels too.

thanks for all the good info so far. A buddy of mine had a brand new armalite and he couldn't get more than 2 rounds out at a time without the thing jamming. we figured out the problem(s) and one of the things was the bad mags (the other was an internal part he tinkered with and broke ) granted i know there are plenty of "good" quality mags out there, what are the best in you alls opions?

You could also buy the cheaper one and mod it up later. The AR is a pretty easy rifle to work on. You may still come out ahead pricewise too.

If you go with a 16" barrel, I'd specifically look for mid-length gas systems. A lot of guns seem to be going the faux M4 route with the short gas system and handguard, but I don't see the point myself. You really don't get anything except the look. The slightly longer barrel and gas system has lower peak pressures. That means less chance of breaking small parts like extractors and generally better reliability.

Get the Colt.

I've got a 6920 that runs flawlessly on all types of ammo (including wolf :neener: ). You get what you pay for and if you want it to go bang everytime, get the Pony on the side.

My bushmaster M4 has run perfect since it came out of the box. Slow fire, rapid fire, I've never had an issue. Plus they all come standard w/ the crome lined barrels. I'd put the reliability and service of a Bushmaster up against a Colt any day of the week. Besides, Colt's policies aren't exactly "civilian" friendly. Also, if this is a defensive purpose firearm, I'd stay away from fancy triggers like the ones in the Rock River guns. Stick to the standard AR trigger.

Mags in most cases are the issue. I would recommend you use USGI mags for any and all serious situations. I have bought some Orlites in the past from CDNN used for $6, however, these are used only as range mags. USGIs will run you about $8-10 used to $13-18 new. Some folks swear by the green followers, to tell you the truth I have switched all of mine to the green followers, but I never had a problem with the black ones either.

I'd also recommend grabbing a few 20 rounders as well, the 30 rounders can make firing from the prone position a task.

Be careful, after you buy your first, something strange will come over you and you'll want to build a second one. When that happens, I'd suggest a Stag or RR lower and then watching the Equipment Exchange over at AR15.com. You'd be surprised at the deals and group buys that pop up over there.

My armalite is a little sensitive to mags as well. I had to make sure mags worked in it before buying too many. That being said, if you buy quality mags, they should work. I have two USA 40 rd mags that work very well. The 30 rounders I have were all $10 to $15 so good quality is not necessarily expensive. My Armalite eats any and all ammo I have tried including Wolf. The only other AR I have fired is an old Colt sp1 so I don't have a lot of comparrisons. I guess I need to find someone with a newer Colt or Bushmaster to compare.
