I will be order an upper to complete my ar project...hopefully sooner rather than later. I have narrowed my choices to 2.
1. Rock River mid-length A4
2. Bushmaster Dissipator w/ light wt barrel

I know there is a price difference, but I'm only doing this once so I'm looking primarily at quality, accuracy, pride of ownership...all the things we look for before we purchase a firearm

Well? Which one should I go with?

Oh, by the way, I have a RRA lower to pair this upper with

Thanks for the help ;)

I like the look and the long sight radius of the Dissy, but it still has a short CAR gas system. IMO, the midlength gas system with it's softer gas impulse is a better system funtionally, for only a small tradeoff in sight radius.

If you get your midlength turned down under the handguards to a Govt. profile, it's also lighter than the M4 Dissipator (even slightly lighter than a regular M4). I've got an RRA chrome lined Govt. profile midlength from ADCO and I love it.

It may be worth checking out www.cmmginc.com. They make some Dissipators with a midlength gas system. They also make some nice midlengths including a very light and handy 14.5 inch midlength with a permenently attached flash hider to bring the total barrel length to 16".

I ended up going w/ the midlength A4 from RRA w/ the tactical muzzle break. From what I can tell this should make a nice set up & make for a nice complettion to my AR project.

If I were going to buy an AR type...

...And there are a lot of ifs and buts between me and and owning an AR-15, BUT, if I were going to buy one, I'd get a dissipator type. Mainly, I like the way they look. Also, though, I like the longer sight radius, and having the handguard cover more barrel isn't a bad thing. (Protects it, protects your hands, gives you more gripping area, and if you like rail handguards it gives you more room to mount stuff.)

I have the long handguards/short barrel combo on my FAL and I think it looks stubby and mean. Same for this type of AR. Just me, though.

Really depends on the application. The Dissy has a nice sight radius with irons and has a cool factor you don't see everyday.......

If you're gonna scope it, then whichever is cheaper.

I think the midlength system has more advantages than the two gas-block carbine gas system Bushmaster uses for its Dissy. Besides you can always add a full-length rail to the RRA and then throw a front sight on the rail and get the Dissy sight radius with the longer gas system.

That's exactly what I'm doing right now to one of my midlengths. The sight will probably stay folded and I'll be using optic primarily, but it's stuff I had laying around anyway.

Why is it called a Dissapator? I like how they look, but do not get the name.
Good question. Maybe it had something to do with the longer A2 style handguard dissipating heat from the barrel?

Bushmaster came up with that name (I think they pretty much invented the concept for commercial sales, although Colt had some prototypes years ago of something similar for .gov contracts). Now the name "Dissipator" is used generically for any carbine with a full length handguard.

One other company called their version the "Eliminator", I believe it was either DPMS or Olympic.

Can you post a picture of this rifle and give me more details on it's build? Do you still like it?

You can get both from CMMG. They sell a mid-length gas dissipator style upper. I dig on the dissipator too, good choice!
