After asking for and recieving much excellent advice from the members here several months ago on what .50 caliber rifle to buy I finally made the plunge today.

I ended up with a Barrett Model 99. It came with optics, a beautiful wheeled hard case, and a nice little cleaning kit. I paid $3550 plus tax so I don't feel that I did that bad really.

The weapon itself is gorgeous! Superb craftsmanship, the bolt is exceptionally smooth. But the weight of this thing, WOW! 25lbs. is a lot of weight in a rifle.

The thought of someone using one of these to cause havoc in some kind of terrorist plot like the anti gunners cry about is laughable at best. The thing is so massive it could never be concealed. It simply needs to be seen up close to understand the comical aspect of someone using it to stir up trouble.

Anyway, on to the pics. In the foreground is a .50 BMG, 30/06, and .223 to give some sense of scale.

From the other side, try to overlook the oily fingerprints I didn't wipe from the reciever.

That's it for now. I have a 100 yard range in my backyard but don't feel comfortable firing this monster there. I don't have an adequate backstop to handle a round like this. And 100 yards is kind of a joke for a rifle like this. There is a 300 yard range close to me that I will get to soon, expect a range report then!

Try not to shoot any satalites down or through any nearby (within 100 miles) nuclear reactors. :D :neener:

Enjoy. .50s do nothing for me but I do like the pictures have fun shooting that bad boy.

    Congrats! I'm jealous....

Seeing the three rounds side-by-side is great for the "holy sh*t" effect.

Be sure to alert local air traffic controllers before your range trip.

You're going to learn that getting this look :D off your face is going to be hard for a few days after firing it for the first time.

I believe in the near future you will wish you had bought ten (10)
rifles. These rifles are almost certain to receive restrictive legislation.
Now the next thing you need is a reloading setup and cases, bullets,
primers and powder. You are most wise to buy this. good luck.

I have a bad case of rifle envy right now. I suggest you find a nice dusty patch of ground and shoot it prone your first time out. :neener: If you are wise to this one, convince a buddy to stand a couple feet behind the brake and about 10 feet out. Be prepared to run though as he will come after you once he determines if he has actually messed his britches or not.

Yes, it's a "destructive device", transfers on a $200 tax stamp.

Thanks for the nice comments all. Very flattering. I really feel super fortunate to have this monster in my collection right now.

    spyderdude-

I came home with 10 rounds of ammo. More will be arriving via UPS shortly. At the gun store price of $2.39 per round I didn't want to go too crazy.

    Outlaws-

In the current setup the eye relief is far too long for me. Thankfully there is a ton of room for adjustment left.

I hope I will have some video up soon of the first range trip, at the very least some pictures.

There is even a 50BMG Short of sorts that has been developed. I forget the name, but they pushed the shoulder down about .1" and thus the cartridge no longer conforms to the definition of a ".50BMG" set by SAAMI and is completely legal in California. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

    EDIT

The .510 DTC is what its called.
