Some friends and I bought .50 BMG rifles just before the California ban. Most of us probably won't ever get into long-range target shooting as major hobby. We bought them because they look like fun, and it was now or never (mostly the latter). Realistically, we'll probably take them out a few times a year for some long-range plinking (and to let friends try them).

We need scopes, but (in spite of the high cost of the rifles), we don't want to spend more than we have to to get usable scopes. Then again, we don't want scopes that won't let us see 1,000 yards, or that will fall apart from recoil. Reasonably long eye relief would also be critical for safety.

We're hoping there are some serviceable scopes for under $300 that can handle .50 BMG recoil. Under $200 would be even better. Of course, a good warranty would be a big plus (since I imagine the recoil of a .50 could potientially damage most any scope).

We're considering scopes like the Bushnell Elite 3200 or Simmons AETEC (3.8-12X, 44mm Obj.). Or maybe a Sightron or Nikon? I assume we'll want pretty high powered scopes. Maybe a fixed power would be the best value. What do you recommend?

By the way, we know there are much more expensive scopes that would generally be considered better matches for a .50 BMG - but just buying the rifles is quite a stretch for us and we really don't want to drop an additional $500-$1,500 on scopes for our "plinkers."

Thanks

Doug

Where are you at in Kali?

Barrett was offering a package deal with the Elite 3200, you can also look at the Tasco Super Sniper scopes. Either scope will work, for how long is uncertain. You can also try looking around for a used Leupold or an IOR scope.

Best thing to look at is the warranty and customer service.

The Super Sniper would probably be your best bet in that price range, they run right at $300 (just a note, Tasco does not make these and hasn't for a while)

Aetec's are great values. But I have known a couple to fail on 7 mags after a few hundred rounds. I believe the 3200 would be a tougher scope. Though defining scope toughness is fraught with difficulty.

I also think you are correct about it being a good idea to get a fixed power. So the Elite 3200 10x mil dot should be a natural for a 50.

Simmons is coming out with a Maste Line Aetec. I think the Master Line 3.8-12x Aetec is $189 at www.midsouthshooterssupply.com and the reason they might be worth a look is Simmons will guarantee a 48 hour turn around if you have to send the scope in for work.

You really should save your money and spend $800 on a Leupold Mk 4 with 50bmg come ups. I have had 0 problems in 10 years with this package on a Light Fifty. However the Super Sniper is/was milspec for .50 cal duty and I have,nt heard of one folding on anybody yet.Get the 10x42mm with rear focus! :)

HA! That's what you think!

Now that you have a 2000yd gun, you WILL want to get into long range shooting. Belive me. It's a sickness, and there's no cure (and I don't want one!)

I thought the same thing as you once. Then I got the Nightforce, and it was all over.

Get the 5.5-22x56mm with NP-R2 reticule. $1400 from Don with Badger MAX-50 rings and BC Covers. You will not regret it.

Order from this guy, he is the best. Don: [email protected]
