Looking at barrels for upcoming AR build. I dont have any problem with spending extra for the chrome lined bores and chambers, but are they really needed, or just recommended?

Also, heavy fluted stainless barrels better than standard m4 profile, or am I spending more money for not much more gain?

Thanks,
Maurice.

IMO, chrome lined bores/chambers are nice if you plan on shooting corrisive ammo. Not bad insurance in any case though.

Chrome line essentially doubles heat tollerance, and barrel life (practically speaking.) I'd say it's a no-brainer on an M4 profile gun.

Heavy stainless barrels are very accurate, and very heavy, screwing up the quick handling of the AR.

Bench gun, or CQB carbine? The AR can be many things, which do YOU want?

Seems like a no brainer if it extends the life and increases heat tolerance.
Atherd- no, dont need a bench gun. I would like the extra accuracy, but its not going to be a varmit gun, so I probably wont mess with them this time.

Thanks for the replies.

Chrome lined chamber and bore are MANDATORY in my opinion when it comes to an AR. Unless you've got a stainless target barrel. The military requires it, the 2 best AR makers (Colt & Bushmaster) have it on their rifles....

It improves reliability by making extraction easier, it increases the life of the barrel a lot, and it makes cleaning easier. Not to mention, it resists rust...

Oh, and it really doesn't kill accuracy..you can still shoot a tiny group with a barrel like that. Now, if you're going to actually measure groups and focus on rested bench shooting, handload, get fancy triggers and optics...then you wouldn't want chrome lined barrel. You're doing the kind of shooting where every 0.1" off a group counts. I don't do that kind of shooting, yet the chromed barrels are pretty darn accurate anyway.

All I'm gonna say is that I worry less about my chrome lined AR than my non chrome lined m1a scout squad.

Not that I worry all that much about my rifles.

Feh.

You know what I mean.

The M1 is chrome lined. So is the M14.
US military rifles have been chrome lined since WWII.

I HAVE A STAINLESS MATCH bbl AR and a chrome lined 16" BUSHMASTER .
I shoot wolf 62 gr through the chrome lined sometimes 1000 rds at a time before cleaning ,accuracy is decent and the bore is easy to clean

another reason the military uses chrome barrels is that their M16's are fully auto and I think that is the main reason they have chrome barrels. The average shooter will never shoot enough to wear out an ar15 barrel. I like SS barrels a lot better, they clean up just as good as the chrome lined barrels and are more accurate.
