I am curious is anyone has chrono data from a 5” barrel for the following. It’s a 1911 GI

I shot my chrono which wouldn’t have worked on a 1911 regardless. (Magnetospeed)

230gr FMJ @ 1.240
4.6 gr tightgroup
4.8 gr HP38 / 231
5 gr HP38 / 231

My main curiosity revolves around perceived recoil. I shot 60 tightgroup tonight and 120 HP38@ 5gr. It’s a noticeably different gun with those loads.

Off hand the TG is snappy and maybe more accurate, but my accuracy went down hill later in the shoot.

The HP36@ 5gr is a nice soft shooting load and I am curious if they have similar ballistics.

Regardless, these darn 1911’s are dirty. I mean like nothing I have seen before with my plastic guns. I did a lot of scrapping and polishing to clean it up afterwards.

Did you mean 230 FMJ or 240? (possible typo?)

thanks dude. Not that it matters for me, but looks like 5gr is just under the 45 major threshold of 170? I’m guessing that is not what is considered a stout load.

comments above referenced increasing powder to clean up the burn. I may need to do that and try to get in that 800 fps range. Also need to get another chrono. Can’t reload without one.

If you increase the charge of W231 to 5.4gr the ammo will clean up considerably
Thanks ArchAngel

5.4 gr is getting up at top end for HP 38. I saw a reference for 5.7gr online, but I won’t trust that.

I was looking for an accurate powder puff load. I’ll try a few rungs higher and see how she looks.

If you are looking @ the Hodgdon data that charge is high but only because their OAL is 1.200". When I load a 230gr bullet I charge 5.5gr W231/HP-38 but my OAL is between 1.255" and 1.265". When you see differences in charge weights be aware of the OAL used, it will explain the discrepancies.

Thanks! I will look this over.

I am going to ramp things up a bit and see how cleanly they are.

HP-38/231 is the classsic .45ACP powder, but can be a bit temperature sensitive.
Titegroup is popular with folks trying to get the most loads out of a pound of powder, but I've always found it dirty and it tends to burn hot which makes loads smokey...I've also found it snappy.

When you're ready to branch out, you might like to try Clays or N310. They both burn very clean and quite a bit softer than Titegroup

I used up a pound of Clays in the 45 Auto and .38 Special and it works well and it's clean too. The problem for me is, when you get up near the top end of the load range it can spike pressures. I just don't trust it even though the results are good. I decided to leave it for the guys who load shotgun ammo lol.

Unfortunately there isn't hand has never been VV powders available where I live. They also cost more form what I see online. I hear very good thing about VV powders but haven't used any of them as of yet.

Not exactly what your shooting but I have a Springfield mil-spec 1911 in 45 Auto and I shot Winchester factory 230gr ammo and got ~850fps and my 6.9gr CFE Pistol 230gr load does ~850 as well. I just put a Nighthawk threaded barrel in it so I haven't chronographed loads through it yet to see if the half inch longer barrel makes a difference or not.
I haven't tried titegroup... I do use titegroup for 45 Colt 250gr lead cowboy spec loads.

I’m guessing that is not what is considered a stout load.
Not stout at all, both 4.7 and 5gr with a 230 are my plinking/ practice loads and I wasn't concerned about trying to make major PF.
If I was I would probably bump up to 5.1 or 5.2 gr of HP38/W231 to give me some wiggle room, 5.0 gr made 165 PF barely.

IMG_8682.jpeg I used a LabRadar and got these numbers with Titegroup. I’ve started experimenting with W244 and am liking it for a few pistol loads. Titegroup is not a bad powder. I get some good accuracy with it.
