Just for something to do I have decided to chrony some of the high velocity 22LR ammo in my collection. Interested in seeing how close they get to published velocities in my rifle. I know for example CCI velocitors while being a hard hitter in 22LR, dont reach their claims of 1435fps( at least in my guns or internet tests)

Test rifle is a Ruger 96/22 lever action( closed breech gun) with a 18.5" barrel
Chrony is a Prochrono.
Will add 5 shot strings and extreme spreads.
(Added results to a new post below)

Starting line up.

CCI Velocitor 40 grain 1435fps claimed

CCI Stinger 32 grain, 1640fps claimed

CCI Segmented EX HP 32 grain, 1640fps claimed.

Remington Yellow Jacket 33 grain, 1500fps claimed.

Aguila Interceptor HP 40 grain, 1470fps claimed.

Aguila Supermax HP 30 grains, 1700fps claimed

I am super interested in your real world testing. I have all but the SuperMax in my “for hunting” stores. They’re still there because I’m afraid of what they might actually do to a rabbit, and I never have time to dig them out when a pest needs zapping.

It’s always fun to take several different kinds out and see how much differently they print, too.

Foremost, have a great day shooting!:)

Results in folks.Average velocity over 5 shot strings and extreme spread.

CCI Velocitor 40 grain 1435fps claimed. Actual 1421fps, ES 98fps

CCI Stinger 32 grain, 1640fps claimed. Actual 1571fps and ES 57fps

CCI Segmented EX HP 32 grain, 1640fps claimed. Actual 1602fps and ES 68fps

Remington Yellow Jacket 33 grain, 1500fps claimed. Actual 1303fps and ES 82fps

Aguila Interceptor HP 40 grain, 1470fps claimed. Actual 1447fps and ES 159fps(!)

Aguila Supermax HP 30 grains, 1700fps claimed. Actual 1595fps and ES 87fps.

My thoughts

Velocitors came closest to box claims, also felt the most powerful recoil wise.
Remington yellow jackets fell almost 200fps short of box claims.
The Aguila interceptor, achieved similar average power to velocitors, but large spread of 159fps, velocities between 1393fps and 1606 fps. The 1606fps load ranks as the number 1 for power for the day, 229ftlbs.
CCI stingers came in 70fps slower than their packet claims which is usual but had the most consistent velocities.
The aguila supermax had the most impressive numbers on the box( 1700fps with 30 grain) but in practice fell short about 100fps.

Did you read either post? I wasnt measuring either of these.

Sample size is the number of shots you took. You said you shot 5 shot strings, so you did measure sample size.

If you recorded the velocity of each round, you measured everything you needed to calculate standard deviation.

SD is on my mind when you’re reporting extreme spreads. One bad round up or down can and does grossly influence the ES (Range), but if lots of rounds are bundled together with only one outlier, the SD won’t shift as far (as it is a population weighted average).

Thanks Demi-human, it was a good day. Some people see the use of the data, though others seem a little upset I didnt continue down the mathetamical roads further for their convenience. Its like posting youtube videos I guess, cant keep everyone happy.

I didnt record groups this time, I know from experience the velocitors perform the best in my 96/22 with HV ammo. Was surprised at the velocity of the Remington Yellow jackets....1300fps and that light bullet means only about the same energy as bulk federal champion HP. I'll use up the rest of the packet and buy no more.

Tough crowd around here.:scrutiny: Let them do it.

Thanks for the results,

I'm not I've never had good results with Remington 22 LR lol.
The CCI velocities are close enough considering they probably use a longer test barrel than your Ruger's 18.5".
I'm about to the point of only shooting CCI rimfire.
Thanks for the test.

I'll have to get a new chronograph before I can do any testing with my Savage MkII BTVLSS. The BTVLSS has a 21" barrel.

I went to get my chronograph out and the old thing finally bit the dust :(

PS. I am open to suggestions on a replacement without breaking the bank.

I'm gonna have to get some of the Interceptors in the future as that's one of the 40gr ultra high velocity .22 ammo available. I've clocked the Winchester 40gr Hyper Speed going 50 fps faster than Velocitors from several guns, but the reliability is meh. If Interceptor can get me higher velocity than Velocitor plus good accuracy and be reliable it would be a winner.

My pleasure. Im not sure if a longer barrel in 22LR has much of an effect. past 18". I dont have another to compare.. Maybe for stingers and real hyper speed stuff you mght get some more out of it. Incidentally I pulled bullets on some 22LR so see what makes them tick and most regular velocity rounds were packing around a grain or so. Stingers were a full 2 grains. Im switching to all CCI's for hunting now myself too

I used a Shooting Chrony F-1, in fact several over 2 decades. It was always the cheapest. This time I got a Prochrono., also affordable. Checked a lot of youtube videos, the fellas using Caldwell precision seemed to get more missed shots or non-readings than the prochrono vids I saw. Purely anecdotal observation though. Neither are top end units of course

I used their older model for 20 years or so. This newer model is better and you can either save data to your smart phone or use your smart phone as a remote. I have seen it on sale for $129.99 (I got mine for $117 on my birthday special from Midway). Used it last Friday, it was flawless chronographing .270 Win and .308 Win loads. A buddy ran one of his .223 Rem heavy bullet loads over it and said it was right on where his magneto speed results.

It was an old Caldwell chronograph that died on me. So I probably won't get another. But I can't really complain, it did last a very long time.

To stay on subject, once I get a replacement, I will test what ammo I have on hand with my Savage MkII to see how a 21" barrel compares to what is printed on the boxes.

I'm willing to say the actual speeds out of the 21" barrel will be closer to what the manufacturers state.
