TACTICAL RIFLE & CARBINE COURSE

August 17-18, 2003

INSTRUCTOR: Chuck Taylor

This highly condensed weekend course will take place at HALO Group in Concord, CA. This course will provide the student with an all-encompassing look at the rifle from a totally practical standpoint and provides all the skills and knowledge needed to become an effective rifle marksman. Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll know how to hit targets quickly and accurately out to 200 meters and beyond from a variety of field-shooting positions.

Lecture/Discussion topics include Deadly Force and the Law; Effective Weapon/Ammunition/Support Equipment Selection and Small Arms Stopping Power. “Hands-on†topics covered include Correct Stance; Proper Sighting Under Stress; Tactical Carry & Ready Positions; Field Shooting Positions (Offhand, Sitting, Kneeling, Squat & Prone); Partial/Angled Targets; Use Of The Sling; Small Targets At Close Range; Responses to the Right & Left; Malfunction Clearance Procedures and Magazine Changing.

250 rds. Of ammunition and the usual shooting equipment (ear & eye protection, appropriate clothing, knee & elbow protection, 2 spare magazines & appropriate carrying equipment) are required. Optically sighted rifles OK. Bolt and lever action rifles also OK.

Whether you’re interested in self-protection or simply want to enhance your rifle skills as a hunter, you’ll find this course to be ideal. We guarantee it! Space is limited.

I would like to attend.

Chuck taught me a lot in a short time at the Pistol Course I attended recently at HALO. We even had a real Hollywood Movie Star taking the class, but everyone got the same personal attention from Chuck.

Though Chuck spins a yarn from time to time (ok, a lot) - I believe he does it primarily so that those present can learn what _he's_ learned...

That said, If I had to choose between:

a) learning his stories, so that I can retell them, or
b) learning - tactically - what he's learned from these events

...I'd take the latter, every time.

Regardless of the ratio of stories to training, I look forward to taking more training with Chuck, training at HALO, and learning from those who've 'been there', wherever I encounter them.

Sincerely,

-s

I'm going- so are, as far as a I can tell, about a half dozen of the guys (or gals...who knows from a internet nick?) from calguns.net are going also.

Gonna be hot though- time to pick up a 'high speed low drag' camel back rig.

I loved the training. But the stories were friggin awsome. I love telling the zimbabwean cocktail party. That always gets laughs.

Chuck's the man - he got back to me in minutes with a question I emailed. The stories were great - wish we didn't have relays and that we had really pushed the guns harder, but maybe that's reserved for the advanced classes.

I'm building my M1A right now... really would feel undergunned with my M1 Carbine at the rifle course... maybe next year.

Well, since we’re getting closer to the date of the rifle course so it’s time for a sanity check:

Bushmaster carbine, iron sights zeroed at 100yds.
Two magazines required. Bringing two more as back-ups.
200 rounds required. Bringing a full case of PMC 55grn FMJ.
Drop rig magazine carrier from CQB Solutions.
Knee pads required. Mmmm…ok how about kneepads used in street hockey?
Eye and ear protection.
Ball cap to keep the sun off.
Minimalist camelback to keep hydrated (gets pretty hot at that range in the summer).
Military style cleaning kit. Maybe it’s time to get that Otis kit all the cool kids have?
Spare parts kit.
Power bars.

What have I missed?

I took this course a couple of years ago at The Firearms Academy of Seattle( FAS). It was a good course. Chuck is a very interesting guy! FAS is a great training facility.

I'd suggest:

elbow pads(we did a lot of shooting from the bare ground)

insect repellent(for the same reason, Onalaska WA is a buggy place, I don't know about where you're going)

ear plugs in addition to a set or muffs compatable with shooting a rifle("double plugging"--when you're laying on the ground and an AR15 is going off to your right and an AR10 .308 is going off on your left you will appreciate this advice.

sun screen

the 20 rnd. mags seemed to work best for those in the class. The 30s were too long for many students.

We did some night shooting so you may want to take a flashlight just in case.

A change of clothes for the end of the day. We spent quite a bit of time on the ground and naturally you get dirty.

Report back about your experience in the class. I think you'll find it fun!

Stay Safe, Pat S

I'll consider going the MOMENT I receive my certificate for the last course I took at HALO... over two months ago!

Personal emails with HALO and Taylor a few weeks ago promised much, but delivered little.

Hope you guys have better luck getting your papers. Something's rotten in Denmark.

Sven

Talked w/ Chuck last week about the certificates. Chuck said that he mailed to HALO about six weeks ago. HALO has several mailing addresses, and he didn't remember where he sent them to. Anyway, we never received them. He is re-sending them direct to me, and I'll turn them around as soon as I get them. This won't happen again, we are sending Chuck the class rosters in advance of the classes, so we can put the certificates in your hands at the end of the class.

Sorry for the delay.

DVD Tracker

I'll bring my "Evil Black Rifle" just in case that my M1 Carbine takes a "dump"(never happened yet). If you're using iron sights, we can have a little Money Shoot. Young vs.Old; both Carbine's & People.

The HALO Group site is down. Is it because you are you puttting up the Course descriptions?
