December 5, 2005 -- Gun-tracing data should be made more accessible to local law enforcement, Sen. Charles Schumer said yesterday.
"It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that more illegal guns mean more gun crimes. And [last] week's death was a tragic reminder," said Schumer (D-N.Y.), referring to the murder of Brooklyn Police Officer Dillon Stewart with a gun that turned out to have been stolen in Florida more than six years ago.

Schumer noted that while 92 percent of the illegal handguns recovered in New York City from 1988 to 2003 had come from out of state, federal restrictions prevent the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from sharing information from its National Tracing Center.

He called for a law that will allow the ATF to release gun-tracing data. But ATF Special Agent Joseph Green said yesterday that the data is already shared with local authorities when there is an ongoing investigation.

I guess I'm not too swift because I am having a very difficult time figuring out how being able to trace a gun after it's been used in a crime will help reduce crime...

What the heck am I missing here?

He's one of the few talking heads that I literally just can't stand to hear or watch on television. Begalia and Stephanopolous are up there as well. Their very presence on screen is irritation to the senses.

Either way, this is just another gun bill designed to cause trouble for the average tax payer while doing nothing to improve crime statistics (like lowering the speed limit causes more tickets to be written but fails to curb auto accidents/injuries).

Schumer isn't interested in getting gun tracing data. He is most likely aware that local LE can initiate traces unless it's for a Title II firearm, the records on which are privileged tax info. He most likely wants access to the information contained in the 4473, which is your personal information (Name, DOB, social security number) that links you to a firearms purchase.

The people who swallow what is printed in the NY post have no clue as to how any of this works.

Chucky

Somebody oughta corner that screamin' moron and explain to him that
"Gun Crime" is impossible.

The gun can't do anything by itself...Chucky.

Your car can't crank itself, put itself into gear, and go speed down the interstate...Chucky.

Guns aren't violent...Chucky. Violent behavior requires a thought process and isn't within the capabilities of a machine.

The list could go on, but I really don't think he has the intellect to grasp those concepts. How he even managed to graduate high school is beyond me...

If it's a straw purchase, you can prosecute whoever illegally bought it.

However, as RavenVT100 points out, I suspect that Mr. Schumer isn't at all interested in traces, and is more likely looking for a way to do an end run around the law prohibiting the construction of a Federal gun registry.

How does tracing a gun to it's original owner in Florida reduce crime?

Sounds like an illogical arguement to justify the International Gun'N'Owner Registry Anti's Need Today or IGNORANT for short!!

Werewolf-You are missing nothing. There is nothing here to miss. It is a straightforward misrepresentation by 2A hating individual.

Sen. Schumer is making the opening move of a strategy designed to make transsferring guns without involving an FFL illegal.

Which, of course, will make little difference to criminals, except maybe forcing more of them to steal guns, and just make buying and selling guns more of an expensive PITA to law-abiding gunowners.
