I know what you mean. I too love the long barrels on the S&W’s, they just look great. The 44 Double Action was considered by many to be clumsy in the hand and I believe the frame grip attributed to that opinion. I once owned one that had a 4” barrel and I didn’t like the way it handled however, the one I currently own has the standard 6 1/2” barrel and it feels way different and much better in my hand as opposed to the 4” barrel version. Even though, the 4” barreled version is much rarer, I prefer the longer 6 1/2” barrel. That extra barrel length balances the revolver much better. John Wesley Hardin was carrying a S&W 44 Frontier when John Selman Sr. killed him in the Acme Saloon while Hardin was shooting dice.
