I have a friend who has 2 civil war rifles that belonged to her grandfather. She is 86 and would like to sell them. I understand that they are very valuable. How can she find a buyer? How can she find out exactly their age? How would she go about selling them? I just became a user tonight to find out this info for her. I am hoping this is the correct way to ask a question.
Thank-you for your time.

Value depends on what type of gun and its condition. For a muzzle loader, it's probably anywhere from $800-$1500 - depending on its make, condition and scarcity. So, please provide a description and photos of the guns.

  • If there are stories behind those guns, your friend should write it down and it should stay with the gun (provenance).
  • Especially useful will be the name of the soldier, his unit and anything known about his actions during the war (or were the guns purchased at Bannerman's?).
  • Photos & photocopies of letters or diary of the ancestor to go with the guns also helps increase their attractiveness.
  • If a gun is a Confederate made gun, it will be worth even more than a normal gun of the period.

Useful sights to find more info are buyers include Civilwarguns.com and N-SSA.net Authentic Campaigner (website) may also have potential buyers. If your friend is near Nashville, every Dec. they have a huge Civil War relic and gun show where collectors gather.
