Classic American Rifle

Well, the Springfield was based on a Mauser (as are most modern hunting rifles), Garand was Canadian, I'd say that Stoner's AR-15 was the 1st all American service rifle.

As far as classic, well one usually thinks wood stock and steel, but hasn't the M16 been in service now longer than any other US rifle?

Considering their history, quality, desirability as shooters, the following come to mind:

Winchester Model 70
AR-15/M16
M1 Garand
Winchester Model 1892
"Pennsylvania" Long Rifle

The "Pennsylvania" or "Kentucky" Longrifle. The American Longrifle helped to birth the nation.

I would agree with Driver. A Pennsylvania rifle is the classic American arm, with both extensive military and civilian service. Without it, we might not have ever been a nation.

Personally I would argue that the "All American Rifle" is not any single rifle, but the one that was available and an American used to get the job done. From the long rifles used during the rev. war, to the lever guns used to tame the wild west, from Sargent York's bolt, to the M4 Americans have made guns, or made the guns they had work.

actually i would say the Henry and the Spencer would have been one of the 1st all American service rifle.:D and the Henry also led to the Winchesters which is also an awesome American rifle.
