i'm comparing the remington 700 against the winchester model 70 classic supergrade III. the winchester is almost double the price, but i like some of the features on it like 5 rounds vs 4 rounds. i am comparing 30-06 caliber. any thoughts??? i was going to buy the remington, but now im kinda leaning towards the winchester.

thanks,

My thoughts on it... Winchester classic all the way...

the Winchester has positive feed, positive "claw" extraction, and a sweet safety...

the Remington is a push-feeder, with spring extractor... and a tang safety...

Remington's QC has gone way downhill over the past couple of years. I'd take a Winchester over a current-production Remington any day of the week.

Depends on what you how you want to use the rifle. If you're looking for accuracy and a trigger that's adjustable for creep, overtravel and pull by the consumer, then Remmy is your only choice. Also, Remington doesn't use a tang safety. Good chance that the Remmy will be more accurate than the Winchester.

If you're deer-hunting, accuracy won't make much difference, so if you just like the looks of the more expensive Winchester, then buy it.

Palerider;

I bought a new model classic Winchester 70 in 97 I think it was. In any case, it's been a good gun. 'Bout four years ago I took my antelope, one shot, at 470 lasered yards. Checked it both ways too. Put the bullet about 2" from my ideal hit point. He was dead when I recovered from recoil. This was done off a rock solid rest with a following wind of about 10-15 mph about 5 degrees off my left shoulder. 150 grain bullet, my handload.

Got to love the Winchester Super Grade 70, if you can afford it. Definitely a class above any Remington 700. Really should not even be compared, as they are directed at different buyers. Like asking which you should buy, a Mercedes Benz S Class or a Chrysler La Baron. If you can afford it, go with the Benz.

Way different choices you've got there.
I think you've got yourself talked into the Model 70, and I can't disagree with your choice, based on what it is...
The Winchester 70 Super Grade in .30-06 would be a helluva choice, especially on the .30-06's 100th Anniversary.
The rifle and cartridge are practically synonymous...

I prefer Remington 700's, but IF I ever got a Winchester, it'd be the Featherweight in 6.5x55 Swede...

Spend the big bucks and get the Super Grade!

BTW, I'll take Ginger and a Coke.:evil:
