Give WST a try I have had excellent results. WST is really clean. I liked VV N-340 as well but ran out and fell in love with WST.

Ran out and fell in love with WST?.....Oh, "ran out" and fell in love with WST. :D

Surprised no one suggested Universal nor firming up your crimp a tad. This sometimes yields a cleaner burn.

Clays and 231 are hard to beat. You have to factor in availability, accessible loading data, economy (charge in grains), accuracy, and price. In this regard, 231 is the best (IMHO).

I have used Bullseye for nearly 30 years and still do. I like the VV powders but they don't offer enough of an advantage to pay nearly 50% more per pound over 231 or Clays or Bullseye.

On the "dirty comment", it's mostly cosmetic. I ran my CZ-97 for 1,000 rounds using cast bullets and 231, before cleaning (I kept it lubed). Not a single malfunction.

I've been using WST for my target 45 acp loads and Auto Comp for my self-defense loads. 4.5 grs. of WST and 6.6 grs. of Auto Comp with the 230 gr. fmj or jhp. Both shoot straight and burn clean. With lead, I would use WST.

If pressures aren't high enough, powders may not burn cleanly. Try increasing your powder charge a bit.

Over the years I've heard almost every powder called "dirty", and someone else says it's clean. I think the answer is above: low pressure loads are dirty, high pressure burns cleaner. Also as someone mentioned, a tighter crimp increases pressure and burns cleaner.

I will say, however, that for slow loads, Clays does seem cleaner than Bullseye.

If you are loading fairly hot, many of the powders will burn clean. If you are loading light only a few will burn moderately clean.

Win 231 can be dirty/sooty as heck in a 9mm loaded light (124gr @ 1030-40fps). Crank up the charge a little (1090-1100+) and it becomes much cleaner burning.

One of the attractions to Vit (and I've heard sillouette) is that they'll burn clean with the light load. As the load gets hotter the Vit cleanliness isn't much gain.

PS: I'm getting ready to 'fall in love' with the next bullet I can find available for my 9mm.

Clays, Red Dot, 700X, N310, N320, & Solo 1000 are a few that burn clean and completely at real low pressure. Many don't. HS-6 & Blue Dot, for example, burn pretty dirty until they get some pretty good pressure going, but then they clean up nicely.
