I'm new to the world of proper bolt action rifle cleaning, so please bear with me and keep the flames to a minimum (the Marines don't really go into the use of bore guides, copper solvent, or muzzle protectors when they teach cleaning the M-16). I've been trying to read as much as possible on the subject but I'm still curious about a few things.

My questions are these:

I've heard that Sweets 7.62 is a very good copper solvent. Is there any other that is equal to it or should I just go get some Sweets and be done with it? I ask because I'm having a hard time finding Sweets in the local gun shops.

The Lucas bore guide has also come highly recommended but is it really that much better than the rest and would most do a comparable job?

How does a muzzle protector really work?

Like I said, I'm brand new to this since all of my experience has been with shotguns and M-16s. I appreciate any help that anyone can give.
